Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I got home and checked my magazine and according to Bruce Anderson, the tech guru in Excellence, the 996 engine should run 3,5 bar at 5000 rpm according to PAG.
Leading evidence: 'Replace i just made sure it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check magazine and according' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. He also said that is low compared to the air cooled engines which typically would run about 5 bar at 5000 rpm.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There was just an article about this in Panorama. If my memory is correct, the PAG spec is for 3,5 bar at 5000 rpm. If you're running higher than that when the engine is fully warm, I'd have the dealer take a look at it.
Karl
I have run into the same problem. When my engine warms up, it idles at about 2-2.5 bar, but at 5000 RPM it is well above 4 bar and sometimes at 5 bar. My service manager asked his technician who said it was normal.
I didn't quite believe him, but haven't had any problems as of yet....let me know if you hear otherwise.
My experience is closest to sentipede, I see 5 bar at cruising speeds even at 3 to 4 k RPM, and about 2 to 3 at idle. No problems during the 10k miles I have put on the car 25k to now almost 35k.
And 3 oil changes...
Karl, what year is your car?
My car is/was a 99 C2. To be perfectly honest, I didn't check the oil pressure that often. I just made sure it was changed regularly and not overfilled or underfilled.

If anyone is concerned, they should discuss the situation with the dealer and at least get on record with service department, in case there are any problems down the road.
Karl
My '02 C4S runs at 4.5 anytime the engine goes over 2000 rpm. Even when I am cruising in the heat of summer at a relatively constant rpm, the pressure is at 4.5 bar. When cold, it is pegged at 5 bar. It now has 10,000 miles, and that includes 9 days of hard running DE.
Maybe the statement of 3.5 bar being normal indicates the minimum pressure. I see no reason why a water-cooled engine should have trouble at 4.5 when an air-cooled one has none at the same pressures.
I believe Waz's car runs at 3.5 bar. Anyone else's 996 other than Karl's runs at 3.5?
1 at 1,000 rpm and jumps immediate when i throttle up
3.5~4 at 3~4,000 rpm at hot
4.5 at 5~7,000 rpm at hot
never reaches 5 at hot
cold always hits the 5
i always have the oil level two bars under the maximum and i top it every three months with about 200ml (equivalent drinking glass)

I had my engine replaced, on the old engine it idled at about 2 , soon as I hit the gas, it would jump to max and stay there. on the new engine it goes up and down with engine RPM. My guess is that the sending units in the cars, up until last fall, were all screwy. I agree with Kerry. They all have the same pressure or they would be self destructing all over the place.
I think the gauges are accurate, none are screwy. A manufacturer that has made a name in oil-cooled engines with screwy oil gauges? Naaaah. If you look at all the responses, so far only the Pano techie has a pressure of 3.5. Even Karl says he never really paid that much attention to the oil pressure. That makes a pressure of 4.5 to 5 anytime above idle the average pressure. Maybe it's the Pano techie who is screwy? At least on this particular point, anyway.
So, to answer the original question on this thread: Yes, 4.5 bar at any rpm above idle with an engine at operating temp is normal. Don't worry about it, and enjoy the Porsche!!
Fadz's C4S 996 oil guage acted very erratic jumping from 2 to 5 at constant high rpm's after heating engine..
it was found out that some oil sensors needed to be changed and as the technician at dealership noted also, there is a sensor to alter the angle of the camshaft (variocam) that was faulty..
Whatever, oil pressure is very critical for these cars!
Waz
Didn't mean to insinuate there was something wrong with you car earlier, Waz. Yes, erratic pressure at a constant RPM is bad. It seems, however, that 4.5 bar is good.
Man, I'm getting addicted to this board. On a beautiful Sunday morn, I'm sitting here in my den in front of the computer. I gotta get out and enjoy a drive somewhere, anywhere.
