Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For some unknown reason, my cup holder started getting stuck at about the halfway point when I open it up. I can pull it all the way open, but getting it to go back in is a hassle. Nothing looks broken and I can't see anything that is getting hung up. I thought I would just replace the entire assembly. Has anyone done this before that could offer some advice. On another note, I did discover that it is actually TWO cup holders. I posted about my discovery recently in the "Things you didn't know about your 996" thread. If I can't get it fixed I will likely have to sell the car

POST 2Original post

When I installed a new headunit, I didn't seat the cupholder quite right, and it was binding, which caused it to not open all the way..... It's pretty easy to remove it, and see if when it's out of the car it still binds.

POST 3Original post

I replaced mine when I replaced my headunit because it was broken. The new part is more expensive than I expected, but I'm glad I did it. Once the head unit is out, it's pretty easy to remove the cup holder unit.

POST 4Original post

I have not had any cupholder failures in my '99, nor have any glove-box-related issues cropped up. Must be nice to have a car with such fancy features.

POST 5Original post

This is a well documented issue on the 02+ Typically fail within the first 40k-60k miles depending if you normally have 1 or 2 drinks (extra load) I bet Flat 6 is currently working on a solution which incorporates a ceramic bearing, DOF and the ability to handle twin 7/11 Big Gulp capacity. Expect to see a review in a future Panorama

POST 6Original post

I never use it but when In installed my double din head unit I noticed it would be very easy to replace if needed. Never liked the location, don't like liquid over my radio and HVAC.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I agree with Marc. I ordered the Ultimate Cup Holder. I'm going to live with that awhile before I bother to fix it. Plus, might as well wait to see what JR comes up with
