I'm taking it to a local independent Porsche mechanic who came well recommended for a thorough inspection, but I'm starting to wonder if I jumped on this too fast and got myself a car that's had some repairs.

Superficial front end damage or rock chip repair wouldn't have led to a repaint of the underside of the hood, only a replacement hood would cause a full repaint of the panel.

I feel a bit foolish for not doing a bit more homework and getting a full PPI, but other than the missing sticker, the car is in superb shape and drives better than the other dozen or so 996s I've test driven over the past few months.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just bought a 2003 Carrera, as seen in my profile pic. This was my first time buying from a private seller and it seems I skipped a lot of the pre purchase assurance checks that should have been done. I bought a copy of The Essential 996 after buying the car and as I'm going through it, a few things have caught my eye. Primarily though, I'm concerned about this: ID sticker has obviously been removed, which the Essential guide said is a sign that it may have been in a wreck. Carfax is clean, but I know that doesn't mean much. Car otherwise looks very clean and well maintained. I'm taking it to a local independent Porsche mechanic who came well recommended for a thorough inspection, but I'm starting to wonder if I jumped on this too fast and got myself a car that's had some repairs. Is there any good reason for that sticker to have been removed? Thanks for the help. I think this is going to be a very useful forum!

POST 2Original post

It could have been removed if the hood was repainted, such as to fix the inevitable rock chips that cars pick up over time. Or it's a new hood. I want to encourage you by saying that even if it is a new hood because the original was damaged does not mean you have a problem automobile at all. The severity of an accident and the expertise of the repairing bodyshop both can make a huge difference in the end result. Sometimes I think that cars involved in minor collisions (fender benders) are unfairly branded as being something to avoid. Some $ consideration for a lower value might be in order to account for the lack of original parts from the factory, but with modern techniques, parts, and paint technology minor damage to cars is really no big deal if professionally repaired.

POST 3Original post

I concur with Spokayman and welcome to P-World. Cheers

POST 4Original post

It could also just be that it got wet. Those stickers are just made of paper and they are usually wrinkled and faded anyway. Possibly it just got wet while being washed and peeled off. Could be something as innocent as a child peeling it off - my kids have peeled the labels off lots of stuff. Or, maybe a previous owner just thought it was some sort of left over factory packaging that the dealer forgot to remove when they were doing the pre-delivery detailing. Point is, it wouldn't be that hard for something to happen to it as its not made of a durable material like a VIN plate and it doesn't look important to the uneducated.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the responses and the reassurance. I feel a bit foolish for not doing a bit more homework and getting a full PPI, but other than the missing sticker, the car is in superb shape and drives better than the other dozen or so 996s I've test driven over the past few months. I'm thrilled with the car and with being a Porsche owner, but I'm still looking for any red flags. PCA and Rennlist membership are done!

POST 6Original post

I agree with the above, that there are many reasons why it would be peeled off. Even a replaced hood could have been for a lot of reasons.. I would check the gaps all around the hood and around the headlights. If there are any obvious issues you will see them in the gaps. Also, I find mechanics who do PPIs aren't as good as body shops at detecting previous repairs. For piece of mind you may want to have that done. For what it is worth, my PPI and car fax came back clean, and I am also missing the sticker. It's a long shot, but check the accessory sticker in the manual and see if you have headlight washers.. If optioned, see if they are still working. If it was fixed outside of insurance then they likely didn't spend the money to replace damaged pumps etc.

POST 7Original post

Congrats on your purchase! Superficial front end damage or rock chip repair wouldn't have led to a repaint of the underside of the hood, only a replacement hood would cause a full repaint of the panel. I looked at a 996TT with no sticker which led me to do some research, according to what I found online the stickers were dock or dealer installed, or in some cases not installed. At times they were totally omitted, other times stuck into the owners manual front page. So it doesn't always mean that the car has had paintwork.

This. The '99 I just bought yesterday didn't have the options sticker under the bonnet, which I thought was odd since the car had never had any paint or body work. Sure enough, I flipped through the owner's manual today and it was stuck inside the front cover.

POST 9Original post

All of mine have had a sticker both in the service book and inside frunk lid on 996 or in cargo area under the floor on the Cayennes.

Thanks! If it had simply never been installed, I'd be okay with it. But the sticker was obviously there at one point and torn off at some point. That's what caught my attention in the first place.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 11019101

In that case it was either damaged and torn off, or just torn off by a moron. On the upside, the fact that you can see the sticker residue means that it is the original hood.

POST 12Original post

Drive it, enjoy it, and be satisfied you bought a nice Porsche. Way too much fear lately being generated on the forums. More pics needed.

POST 13Original post

My sticker is pretty wrinkled and sad looking. It is also in the front of my owner's manual but in perfect shape. There is a guy here on RList in Europe that was very graciously re-printing exact replacements for the stickers. He would only do this with a copy of the sticker from the owner's manual, IIRC. I don't know if he is still doing replacements or not. I would like to replace mine since is it so wrinkled from water. Do a search and you may find the thread. Aloha, TomF

Sounds great, if only I had a copy of the sticker in the owners manual. Still seems weird to me that the copy and the original are missing, but there aren't any other red flags. So it goes...
