Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

consoles change very much depending on the options.
Leading evidence: 'Replace very much depending' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace very much depending' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thought it was a little strange there was no cup holders in my new toy...lol
Now it looks like my console arrangement is a little different.
Just read a thread on console delete and how they relocated the hvac to above the radio. That is how mine is now but still have console, did somebody already move it?
I am guessing the cd storage compartment in the console could be removed and then I could fit the twin cupholder unit I have seen on ebay
Please help me understand this confusion....lol
Completely normal set up. There are no factory cup holders for your year; they became available in '01 or '02 I think.
Your HVAC and radio can be moved to the CD holder/cubby area to open up the space for a double din radio.
You can add cup holders from Suncoastparts.com. It's a pretty easy DIY project. I moved the HVAC controls to the bottom position; got a new pocket to go in the CD drawer slot; and put the cup holders up top. The hardest part was fishing the HVAC wiring into the right position. See

and scroll down.
Sounds like it is time for you to meet The Ultimate Cupholder.

No affiliation to them - I've got 2 of them and they work well.
+1 I picked up an UC a few weeks ago - works perfectly even on hard drives.
To the OP - if you want to ditch your CD holder you can pick up an upper storage shelf that will then give you two storage cubbies. It's a Boxster part from what I understand, and pictured in GeorgeCo's post. I did it on my car a few weeks ago.
As a note, the slots in the lower part of the center stack aren't all the same size. Where your current storage cubby is right now is actually larger than the slot where your CD holder is right now. i.e. they're not all interchangeable.
I'd go with the ultimate cupholder. The factory cupholders are fairly useless, unless you only want to hold cans or small cups of coffee. You can still get rid of the CD case though and put another cubby in there.
where did you get the pocket above your HVAC controls? I put in a double DIN radio and moved my HVAC to the bottom but still have that ridiculous CD holder tray. Would much rather have the cubby hole.
Bumperplugs carries them. Probably Suncoast too.
Edit: Currently $45 at Suncoast. Note that the upper and lower pockets are slightly different.

To remove the old CD holder, just pull it out. It'll come, just pull straight. The new shelf just pushes into place.
The stock cupholders are useless unless you are trying to hold a shot glass. A standard coffee cup from Dunkin Donuts, Tim Horton, or Starbucks will overwhelm the standard holder.
I had the Ultimate Cupholders in the beginning. They worked great until I installed the fixed mount for the iPhone, then there were too many things competing for the same space.
No problem with the stock cupholders if you get the right cups. Starbucks makes a 12oz insulated cup that fits perfectly. You do have to be careful with a full cup though. One good bump and you're dumping coffee over everything below.... Been there; done that.
