Not the grill, but the speaker screws hadn't been tightened all the way.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My new 2003 996 coupe with only 650 pretty gentle miles so far (I'm following the manual for break-in, although not going over 4200 rpm is painful!) has developed a mess of noises. Thre seem to be three principal ones: a creaking from around the driver's side rear passenger area (hear it very often), a squeeking from the passenger's side front area (near the glove compartment) (hear it mainly when I go over bumps), and a squeek everytime I engage the clutch pedal (distinct from the click sound that seems to be normal when you engage the clutch on these newer cars). When I check around the web (PCA website, etc), it seems like these sounds are fairly common. Two questions: (i) have any of you had the same (or similar) sounds from your cars; and (ii) is there anything specific I should tell my mechanic to look for to help them speed the process of trying to isolate and correct the problem? Obviously, I not too happy about this stuff in such a new (expensive) car (my 3-year old Toyota Landcruiser is dead silent and I've taken it off-road!); however, if this is normal and it can be fixed, I can deal with it. On a separate topic - if any of you have the upgraded digital HiFi (but not Bose), have you attempted any upgrades on this system and would you recommend what you've done? Thanks in advance for your time and assistance - this is my first post here and it seems like a knowledgable and considerate group. ER

POST 2Original post

Eric, I've got an '02 Land Cruiser - most solid vehicle I've ever driven. Back to the P-car... Don't know about the squeak near the driver's side but my '02 Cab had a squeak where you describe your passenger side one. I only heard it when going over bumps too. Of all things, it turned out to be the speaker in the door . Not the grill, but the speaker screws hadn't been tightened all the way. Simple fix once it was figured out. Good luck with those other noises. By the way, once you start revving over 4,200 the sweet engine noise should drown out some of your troubles.

POST 3Original post

There are at least 7 TSBs on noise problems in the last 2 years. Your dealer should have these and be able to fix any unusual noises. And the clutch click noise is normal. That is the switch that keeps you from starting the car with it in gear (you have to depress the clutch).

POST 4Original post

i got all 3 noises on both my 996's. noise on driver side/rear passenger was rear quarter window molding/seal. after replacement, it's duiet. noise on frt passenger side can be from the junction b/n A-piller and dash board, try to stuff one or two business cars in there to see if it shuts up, if so, the dealer can fix it. it may also be from passenger seat lose. after tightening it down, it's fine. clutch noise. if you are not talking about the swtich which allows you to start your car, then it's just the springs. have dealer lube it. they lubed mine twice before noise goes away. hope that helps.

POST 5Original post

Eric, I have '02 C2, No Noises..anywhere, 9500 miles! These are all DEALER/Porsche problems! I be screaming( after no action). Bring it right in & make 'em fix it. Hope you get these issues resolved quickly. Bill

POST 6Original post

You would think that the company would have all these damn squeaks and clutch noises fixed after being in production for over 4 years. Mine is a 98 build 996, had too many squeaks and rattles I care to talk about. I needed about 6 or 8 visits to the dealer to get those squeaks and rattles fixed. What you ought to do is return the car, get a lease on a used 996TT, and drive the dog **** out of it. :-)
