Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I drove a beautiful preowned C4S today and came away impressed with the overall package. It had good power and handling. Also, I loved the looks!! BUT, during my test drive, the engine blew up out of nowhere. It literally failed during the test drive. The car had just a few thousand miles. The dealer tech stated that Porsche will send them a whole new engine should be in next the car next week. Does this affect the value of the car substantially if the engine has been replaced? Should I stay away from this particular car? Has there been quite a few failures with the 3.6 liter 996 engines? Was this just a fluke? I am now also considering a used 2001 996 TT. Would the turbo's engine be more likely to fail versus the naturally aspirated version? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Given the choice, personally I would definately go for the 2001 TT! there is no doubt about it, what I want from a Porsche is performance and if the TT is in top condition then I would go for it. I would think that having the engine replaced would lower its resale value.

POST 3Original post

The turbo uses a different engine from the 911 Carrera. It uses the "old" engine case which is a true dry sump. This engine has been quite reliable. Only Porsche knows for sure how many of the "new" engines have blown up, but it seems that the incidence of failure is higher than normal. I do think that everyone who has a failure announces it to the world. Since Porsche replaces the engine, we never hear what actually failed and why. Was it an oiling problem which lead to a rod bearing failure which led to a rod failure. Or was a it a bad rod in the first place? Hard to know because those that do know are unlikely to announce the results of their findings. The good news is that Porsche has been standing behind their product and working with the owners who have failures.

POST 8Original post

My first day on this site, and I'm already responding to the same person again! Did you really feel that the C4S's power was adequate, with two-hundred-some-ought extra pounds to lug around with the same 320HP as a C2? I'm curious, as I also have an M5, and traded a '99 Viper GTS for my C2. If you like big power (-to-weight), I'd go for the TT. What's the insurance like? Happy test driving (gotta love that part)! -DT

POST 9Original post

I currently own a 2002 C4S and find the power to be more than adequate. After years of BMWs I have finally seen the light. The C4S in its upper rpms has more power than the M Coupe my wife currently drives and has more raw acceleration to my senses than any BMW I've driven. You should find it more than adequate for most of your normal driving needs. That said, I will probably get a TT when I am ready for a replacement.

POST 10Original post

I hear you there, Dave...the C2 shines once the tach needle gets past noon. Interesting, I test-drove an '02 M Roadster recently. This car should fly (teensy car, big motor), but just didn't seem that quick. Maybe because I wasn't pushing it (brand new car)? Thanks for the scoop on the C4S - that thing must hook up tremendously, and sure looks nicer than my C2. Seems that all ubercar owners have a Jeep parked somewhere...go figure. Cheers, -DT '02 C2 (being replaced w/ '03 C2) '02 M5 (well, can only have one ubercar, and my wife already has a quick sedan, so just being replaced, but what a car) '02 A6 4.2 Sport (hey Audi fans, '02 tranny s/w is a HUGE improvement over prev 4.2's) '02 Wrangler '99 Miata (lives in Maui, the most fun you can have on a sunny day at 45MPH).

POST 11Original post

Hi Sandy, You should take a look at the new GT3 coming out, better power to weight and handling than TT. Is making me think about unloading the M5. Doug <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
