Suggestion

I didn't have to jack up the car at all...I have a low profile oil drain pan..and the filter is easy to access..just make sure you get the rubber o-ring on correctly and put a new crush washer on the drain plug..and don't over tighten the filter housing or drain plug.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm thinking about changing my own oil and filter when due, but I'm not sure if I should let the dealership do it instead. How dificult is this, and will I be missing some other inspection items at the dealership if I do it myself? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

POST 2Original post

Since I volunteer for my local PCA tech team for drivers ed events, I get to use the lifts in the shops that host our events. Getting your car up in the air certainly makes things easier. However, I would say that changing the oil in a 996 is a very simple thing. All you need is a 10MM allen and a good oil filter wrench. I have the one sold by Porsche to fit their filter housing. The filter is in a plastic housing with a disposable paper element. Take care not to damage the housing. The new filter should have a new rubber seal for the filter housing. Have something to contain 8 quarts of hot oil and that's about it. When putting the plug back in make sure you use a new crush ring. Good luck

POST 3Original post

It is very very easy. Send me your email address (privately) and I will forward the instructions on to you.

Boca, attention: - make sure not to overfill, you might damage your rear engine seal - make sure not to overfill, you might damage your rear engine seal - make sure not to overfill, you might damage your rear engine seal - make sure not to overfill, you might damage your rear engine seal After filling oil and letting settle about 15 minutes, put the ignition on and read the oil level on the dash. It should be lower then the maximum level by one notch. More is less, remember.. Waz 996 C2 99

POST 5Original post

I changed my oil using a hydraulic jack, lifting the right rear about 4 or 5 inches. My car has an 8 MM drain plug, not 10. I drained all I could with the rear up, then let it down and got a bunch more out. I put it back up, re-thread the drain plug with a new aluminum washer I bought at a local dealer. You need a proper tool to remove the oil canister. Change out filter, change the o ring and reinstall. Fill with 8.7 quarts mobil 1 per the owner's manual. DO NOT OVERFILL. Check the in dash for oil level, but remember that the dipstick is the most accurate. It's cake, don't pay the dealer for the easy stuff. Taeo

POST 6Original post

In our local Boxster group I have changed the oil so many times that we let the women do it now. Same procedure for a Boxster or a 996 as they have the same design. On a Boxster we jack the left. On a 996 you do it from the right - but I'm slim enough that I can do it on a non lowered 996 w/o a jack as the filter and plug are just behind the right rear wheel. Jeff
