I had installed 996 GT3 LCAs on my 981, and had to use spacers for the tuning fork end of the trailing arms (981 LCA center bushing is much thicker than 996 so the 981/991 tuning forks are much wider).

If there is any play on the existing front trailing arms, then you could also consider using one of your original rear trailing arms after checking those out for any play.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. So i ordered my lower control arms from RM Euro. I'm trying to replace the brake duct but it won't fit. I had to cut it slightly because the opening by the bushing is just too narrow and still it's not a good fit.
The whole arm is beefier, so I went to my order to make sure I got the right ones. RM Euro (and pelican and some other places) list the [phone removed] is the part, however it also shows it as a 997 part on the bag.
So i checked FCP euro and they sell a slightly different part number, [phone removed]. They correspond two 996 and one different 997 part number to it.
The new one that i receive (0004) is also a few millimeters shorter from bolt center to bolt center.
What have you all done, do you know which part you got and should i bother to return these and pay the almost 2x more for the 0025 version from fcp?
This must have come up prior because the duct doesn't fit at all on the new part.
FCP when you search by vehicle:

RM when you search by vehicle:
https://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/99733104302-MFG155-V3190.aspx
Pelican also sells the 0004 version

I faced the same issue and assumed that Meyle is just providing an updated 997 part. For now, I have installed the control arm without the duct. I believe the 997 ducts should fit on this arm but not sure about it.
Well i ordered the 997 GT3 brake ducts which are an exact match for the 996 ones and they don't fit. So i assume there is some oddness in the sizing. The fact that FCP has a different meyle part number suggests meyle does carry the exact replacement but other suppliers are just carrying a one size fits all part.
Little annoying the bushings are also substantially smaller.
What do your old and new arms look like? Porsche changed the construction from cast to forged somewhere along the line. Here is a picture of my original 2002 LCA and a new one.
EDIT: Your picture is the trailing arm. Here's a comparison of old/new for those.
Not sure, but I went to Meyle website and looked up the parts. Sure enough the part the online retailers are selling for the 996 is for the 997.
If you look at the photos of the two, the 0024 part (the one for the 996) is narrower.
So everyone is selling the wrong part, except FCP euro (at least among the handful of big online sellers I searched).
https://www.meyle.com/en/service-cen...ine-catalogue/
Search on left side for 4160500004 and 4160500024 and you'll see the 0024 is made for 996 and has two 996 part numbers, and lists all the 996 cars. And then the 0004 part has one 997 part number and only lists 997 parts.
Guess I gotta have a chat with RM Euro tomorrow.
I should have been more specific, the LCA is fine, it's the trailing arm. I posted a side by side up a few comments. Also, prior comment I see Meyle website confirms the one Pelican and RM Euro are selling for a 996 are for the 997.
The part numbers for 996 and 997 are the same. It could be that some vendors are still making old style parts.
I got the brake ducts to fit on the new arms, can't recall if I had to do anything tricky though.
The 997 part may have supersede the 996 part number but not according to Meyle. They have two different parts. One for 996 and one for 997. FCP's website lists the 996 and the 997 part number in their listing (likely to grab searches for 997). But RM Euro only lists the 997 part (which is printed on the bag from Meyle), though they list the 997 part as OE for the 996.
So Meyle does make a different part, and you can see it is narrower. FCP euro sells one and the rest sell another. I'm sure it's "close enough" but the brake duct 100% does not fit. If you ordered from FCP you likely got the right 996 part and hence why your duct fit not problem.
Here are the two parts from Meyle's website (on left the part number FCP sells, on right the part I got that others sell), you can clearly see the thickness difference. I'm not surprised others haven't noticed, i tend to be way too OCD about things
I would check your old trailing arms for any play, and reuse them on the front end. Theyll probably continue to live a longer life than the replacement Meyles.
If there is any play on the existing front trailing arms, then you could also consider using one of your original rear trailing arms after checking those out for any play. Then stick the Meyles in the rear, because you dont have any rear ducts to attach.
The front existing bushings are totally shot. Do you mean move existing rear to front and put new arms on rear? I have to imagine the rears are also in bad shape. I was only doing fronts for now because I needed to discount to put in new coilovers and was going to just use OE for now and learn camber needs. And the front knocks and rattles so bad.
Yeah, the front and rear trailing arms are identical. The rears may be in better shape than the fronts, due to forward weight transfer during braking. Im not sure if you have the time to disassemble the rear arms to check, though.
The center bushing on a 997 LCA is taller. The diagonal arm is also different to accommodate this. Some adjustable LCA include spacers to be used to accommodate the 997 diagonals.
Looks like RM has
99733104302 (correct one for 996) cross referenced with the 4160500004 (correct one for the 997 non-GT)
997 GT3 use the same as the 996 as the LCA bushings are the same height, just a different design.
I cut my brake ducts and tie wrapped them to fit on the less tapered design of the new arm. Also bought those ducts when they were $6
Yes, RM and seemingly everywhere has the
99733104302 part associated to being for both the 996 and 997. FCP is the only place so far I found that has the correct Meyle part listed for the 996. But it is 50% more expensive. Yes I got the Gt3 ducts when they were ~$7 each. I just checked and now they are $25! FCP has just gotten really expensive...
I'm frustrated I wasted half a day trying to figure this out. And I want the right part and I hope RM doesn't charge me anything to return and restock because that doesn't seem right.
The LCA I have has a 996 part number on the box. Are you saying the trailing arm won't even fit the LCA because it was intended for a different 997 LCA? If I decide to keep the 996 trailing arm, is it going to work? I'm going to have to also cut the duct up to make it fit.
When I did my suspension (front and rear), I got the beefy (0004)
Meyle trailing arms (tuning forks)
and the
Meyle lower control arms (coffin arms)
from rm european. Both fit without a hitch (minus the duct on the front).
I had installed 996 GT3 LCAs on my 981, and had to use spacers for the tuning fork end of the trailing arms (981 LCA center bushing is much thicker than 996 so the 981/991 tuning forks are much wider). I didn't have that issue with the RM European parts.
The correct numbers for the 996 trailing arm
99733104302, 4160500024. Will fit 996 Carerra, 996 and 997 GT3 LCA. Old numbers are 99634104303, 99634104306
So as long as you get the Meyle ending 24 you are good. It seems after a quick look, only FCP has the Meyle part.
Yes this is my finding and what i'm sharing.
Only FCP is selling the actual 996 part, everyone else is selling the 997 part passed off as the 996 part because i guess it is "close enough".
No, this guy has the same wrong 0004 part i was sent. It's not made for the 996. Meyle makes a different part and the online sellers are making the mistake. Look up through the comments and you'll see the two different parts.
997 is 61mm 996 is 43mm
if you have the smaller you have the correct part.
Heres a pic of the 997
you can tell from the picture how much wider they are.
Original is about 45mm and the new is about 43mm. The old might have spread some over the years. They're almost identical except for the thicker design which likely why most people have never even noticed the difference.
Yeh, they are not THAT wide, but they're still a different part. You can see from this video the brake duct on the 0024 part fits perfectly. I have the 0004 part which is NOT the right part. Even though RM/Pelican says it is. ....linked video to 8:00 where you can clearly see the FCP part is an exact match for the duct (and they sell the 0024 part).
You Tube
The part that the brake duct will fit is the OE. Maybe the part that FCP sells is tapered like OE. Maybe that's why it's more. That video is from 3 years ago, maybe the change was made after. The ones you have, same as I have, functionionally are the same.
Again here is a side by side picture from the Meyle's website between the 0024 (on left) and 0004 (on right). Meyle lists the correct application of the parts and the 0024 is for 996 and the 0004 is for 997. Online retailers have just been selling customers the wrong part for years and years and years. It's a close enough fit, so most have just assumed Meyle changed something, in reality they were sold the wrong part. Does it matter? Probably not, but I hate cutting/modifying things that are supposed to fit as intended.
https://www.meyle.com/en/parts-catalog
Ok I have figured out what the issue is. All 996 and 997 have the same dimensions for the rear arms. The 04 number is the 997 rear. No brake duct on the rear so they made it beefier (non-tapered). Maybe they still make the 996 front tapered but most retailers are using the 04 for front and rear 996 as well as the rear 997. Like I said functionally they are same, maybe a little stronger. You can decide for yourself if it's worth the money to get the ones from FCP, FCP lists the 04 as rear 997 carerra.
Ah ha, that makes sense. I was literally was just thinking I might as well swap the fork on the rear and use the thicker ones if I decide to buy the correct fronts. You know, the actual DIY work on the car is WAY faster and easier than the time spent chasing rabbits on the computer! 😂
Well, I just got zapped by this Same-Number-Different-Part fiasco. I have 2 "Fork" LCA-Links, both the same number, HBT. One is narrow-fork, the other is wide-fork. Parts ordered seperately from Pelican. Called them back, sent photos, hope to get another narrow-small-fork correct one.
YPMV
I don't know what the 2004 C4 part is for the front but the key is the Meyle part number that is on the bag or the part. Not the porsche part number. The sellers are incorrectly applying the porsche part number on meyle parts that aren't made specifically for the the 996.
I didn't have a fork width issue. You can goto meyle website and look up the actual meyle part and see what cars it applies to.
Just crazy all these years the sellers have been just mislabeling parts
That's just a shipping mistake on the part of Pelican. Doubt that HBT made the error. The sticker with the part number is something stuck on by Pelican.
