My advice, use what the dealer's used car manager uses.

When I was selling my 00 BMW 740i, many buyers used Edmund's to support a lower price point.

Edmunds is good, but there are so many variables (geographic region, supply of other used Porsches, condition of car, mileage and interested options, etc.).

Suggestion
The dealers pay little attention to Edmunds and tend to use black book because black book compares auction prices (what the car really gets when dealers bid for them...and dealer know their market better than anyone).

Edmunds is good, but there are so many variables (geographic region, supply of other used Porsches, condition of car, mileage and interested options, etc.).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm in a market for a use 996, 99-01 model.
I look in edmund.com price, how accurate are they.
01 C2 dealer retail price $55K
01 C4 dealer retail price $58k
Thanks
As an owner of a '99 996 Cab, I can tell you that the only price that is relevant is the price willing to be paid/offered.
www.kbb.com has more reliable pricing in my opinion. Edmunds is good, but there are so many variables (geographic region, supply of other used Porsches, condition of car, mileage and interested options, etc.).
If you are looking for a GR/SB/BL pristine condition, low mileage Cab, email me.
Pricing has been very soft....but keep in mind, Edmund is using an average number. Plus as Eric points out, there are a lot of variables involved..
MY 2001 was the last year for the C4 coupe, I would have thought it would command a bigger premium than $3000...
I have seen very nice used 2002 C2 models sell for $62,000 to $65,000 recently....between now and Dec. 31st it is a buyers market
In my experience a Porsche dealer will always be more expensive....But until year end the door is open
Good Luck
What I read is that edmunds tries to average the actually selling prices whereas kbb seems to average the asking prices. So most of the time kbb will be higher than edmunds.
Of course, averaging means their data depends a lot on the sample that they use and the accuracy of their sources.
Finally, averaging also means they will always lag behind "current" demand/supply by a little bit.
When I was selling my 00 BMW 740i, many buyers used Edmund's to support a lower price point. I knew that my car was in top condition and everything else out there had a least a ding in it. My price was $54k and most buyers wanted less than $50. Edmunds said it was worth $46. I sold it for $53K!
I don't have much faith in Edmunds. My advice, use what the dealer's used car manager uses. The dealers pay little attention to Edmunds and tend to use black book because black book compares auction prices (what the car really gets when dealers bid for them...and dealer know their market better than anyone).
I just looked at auction prices for Porsches (I have online access to the largest auctions in the US) and I can tell you that if you can find a nice C4 with good equipment for $58,000, it would be a steal or the dealer is buried and must unload in a hurry. Chances are that if it got a low price at auction, the car has/had some issues.
Also, don't forget that on Edmunds, there are a number of adjustments for equipment and the quality of the vehicle (same goes for Black book). When a retail buyer compares cars, and the one with full leather is $60 k, sitting next to one with partial leather, also for $60k, I know which one I'm buying!
I can tell you that the list price for a nice 2000 MY C4 at a high line dealer is typically in the $60s. They might let it go for less because the market is a little soft right now.
