After about 5 minutes of having they key apart I remembered that the system shuts off if it has not been used for a few days and you need to open the door manually to turn back on the system.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok this might sound a little on the stupid side. I took apart my key about two days ago because my entry system was not working. After about 5 minutes of having they key apart I remembered that the system shuts off if it has not been used for a few days and you need to open the door manually to turn back on the system. So I go to put the key together and, nothing. Now I have a taped together Porsche key, kind of shameful, and no clue how to put it back. Am I missing something? I can rebuild an engine on a car but I cant put together a key. I know its just going to be some simple solution that I should have figured out in the first place! Thanks for the help.

I assume you mean the remote key head. I have taken a few apart and there is not much to it.
What does "nothing" mean. Will it start the car. Does the button for the door locks work. Does the red led flash. Or are you having a mechnical problem getting the 2 plastic parts snapped back together and thus the tape. Does your other key work so that you get "something."
Jeff
Once the battery is removed from key for any reason the key needs to be re programed at dealer. This assures many battery sales and lots of labor for the dealer....Good Luck.
I had a similar problem a few years back. Took it in and after fiddling around for 15 minutes the service manager gave up and had their mechanic take a stab. Another 30 minutes of fiddling and it was back together.
I don't believe the post that the key needs to be reprogrammed after relaceing battery is correct.

The key works just fine the only problem is it has tape on it. It is in perfect working order. I do not believe that the key needs to be re programmed after, maybe if it is spare but I had no problems with mine. So basically all I need to know is how to put the key head back together. Sorry if I was unclear on that.

Upon further inspection I saw that there was a small spring slider on the inside of the key head. Does this have to be pushed in somehow or compacted in order to put the key head back together?
My 01 996 book says:
1. Using your finger nail or a small scredriver, carefully lift off the cover of the key grip.
2. Replace the battery etc. etc.
3. Replace the cover and press together firmly.

I figured it out!!!!! I was pounding my head against the wall on this one. It was a simple solution. I had been trying to snap the half of the key with the button into the other side with the battery in it with no luck. Instead you have to snap the battery and circuit board into the button half of the key head so that the battery is facing out then snap that into the other side. Once you do that it is simple. I was really questioning my competence on this one. Thanks for the help guys.
