IMS/RMS replaced (LN Engineering) and all four shocks replaced.
Leading evidence: 'Replace (ln engineering) and all four shocks' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check front cv boots' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm running an EPS IMS on my Boxster and was running the factory IMS on my 996.

It could be a mistake at the shop that did the install, meaning it forgot to send in the old bearing, but just to be sure, you can check here:

Also, have them use their scope camera to look up inside the under trays at the front of the car to look at both sides of the front differential to see if the case is leaking!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi 996'ers,
I'm looking to get back into a 996, this time, potentially a 2002 C4S. I currently have a 2001 Boxster S, and prior ot this, a 2004 996 C2, but that was well over a decade ago.
What are some "must PPI" and things to look out for these days? Ca rhas 150K KM (Canadian car). IMS/RMS replaced (LN Engineering) and all four shocks replaced. The usual suspects like cooling system, chain tensioner and stuff like that are all done within the last two to three years by the current owner. Options are few like Litronics, heated seat, sunroof, rear wiper blade, 6-CD Bose system, nothing special. Thanks in advance!
Sadly, there are people who, knowing the IMS bearing is failing, go ahead and put in a new one and do not register the replacement with LN Engineering. LN does an inspection of the old bearing and if you don't send it to them, you don't get the registration. It could be a mistake at the shop that did the install, meaning it forgot to send in the old bearing, but just to be sure, you can check here:
Does my car have it already? – IMS Retrofit
All you need is the VIN or the bearing #.
Wow, good to know about the LN Engineering IMS bearing. The owner of this C4S has the LN Engineering IMS installed by a local shop but I never thought to ask if it was registered.
I'm running an EPS IMS on my Boxster and was running the factory IMS on my 996.
Outside of the usual wear and tear items, are the C4S models more prone to CV boots being torn? (My assumption is yes).
The front boots on a C4S have a tendency to split. Don't know why, just happens. If the axles have not been out for over 20+ years, it "may" be a big issue to get the axles out of wheel carrier. (ask me how I know...) The CVs are old-hat, been around forever, even in air-kooled days, nothing new, pretty simple.
Some cogent thoughts in this thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-pictures.html
There are a lot of things to look at/for in a 20+ y.o. car, so don't expect perfect. For some reason, many 996 owners just didn't do maintenance and dumped the car later. On the PLUS side, there were only about 17000 C4S cars, so they are getting more and more scarce. Even fewer cabs..
You get a lot of the turbo goodies, bigger brakes, rads, A/C, suspension, wider tires/wheels, HID headlights, neater front end, leather, interior doo-dahs (Bose=PITA), and the beautiful back end. A plus is many turbo parts fit the C4S, so finding something specific may be doubled by looking at turbo stuff. Something to think about. If the minus/plus faults/features are OK in your mind, then go for it with eyes open and reality.
My view is decide if a C4S is your choice. I happen to love mine, a forever-car for me. I was tempted by other 996/997, but always came back to a C4S. JMO
(not my graph, someone else on RL found it)
YMMV
As noted, the CV boots are often bad, so yes, check these at the front and the axel boots back at the engine. Also, have them use their scope camera to look up inside the under trays at the front of the car to look at both sides of the front differential to see if the case is leaking! Common at this age and sometimes not checked during a PPI.
Ah, thanks for that.
The transfer case leak - Is this a wear and tear item that simply requires a new gasket/reseal due to age/mileage? Or is there more than that that could warrant a costly repair?
Everythimg on these cars is a costly repair if a shop is doing it.
Oil leaks on the front diff are usually drive flange seals which are straightforward to replace.
