Re-check the tire pressures after they now "settled" in (IMHO a bit bellow factory recommended pressures), and your set for some "BMW M-POWER" spanking!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess it is normal for my new S02's to get sticky and more adherant to the tarmac after about 750km of running them in? I also noticed, following my panic post of the tramline behaviour, that they're swaying much less now. Having noticed the above, i guess i can go supersonic now? (+250km?) Wael 996 C2 99 **getting harder to do donuts now! **

POST 2Original post

Absolutely!! Personally, I found the S03's to be much slower to wear-in than the S02's, to the point that initially, I was beginning to think that the S03's were as bad as the the OEM Conti's! Re-check the tire pressures after they now "settled" in (IMHO a bit bellow factory recommended pressures), and your set for some "BMW M-POWER" spanking!

Carlos, the bugger didnt show up! anyway, i'll send a post of yesterday's rally soon.. wael

POST 4Original post

Oh well , he probably did some research on the 996 and decided to avoid the humiliation

POST 5Original post

Wael? Have you ever thought what can happen if the tyre explodes while speeding @ 250Km/hr coz the Doc. (996Turbo/01) was telling me the car might roll over, is it true??? fadz-C4S/02

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes it can blow up especially those S002's it seems due to sidewall failure.. The reason for this as i understand from rennlisters can be: 1) deffect in the tyre: this is why i was suggested to speed gradually as they wear out 2) brand new tyres need to 'settle-in' and the threads have to be kind of 'broken-in' for the first 1000km, otherwise it might fail 3)low tyre pressure. This is why i start off with 34/36 cold and run about 25 to 30km at under 200kph.. I then check pressures again to be under 40's while the tyre has gained max operating temperature (my ambient varies between 30~33Cdeg) Moreover, i noticed one thing: the Pole Positions you sent me are different from the non-pole position i had in my car, by having a thickened sidewall ring,, maybe coz of this matter? Wael

What do they mean by self-inflating tyres?? fadz-C4S/02

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Where did you see that? I know there are pressure probes you can have on your wheels.. but self-inflating? News to me. Wael

POST 10Original post

[quote] He can run but he cant hide.

But hope he doesnt buy a 996TT now in the meantime before you catch him BTW, the difference I know between the S02's Pole posuitions and the previous non-pole positions is that the pole positions have a different rubber compound with more silica underneath as they wear-out to increase grip and so maintaining adecuate grip when they get close to being worn-out. As an anecdote, I have driven 200kh/h+ with a just about flat S02 (air valve problem) and also on another ocasion with a Michelin MXX3 (a nail went through it) with no problem. These tires have such a hard sidewall that the tires resisted with no problem, especially the MXX3's, to the point that when I stopped (after a while)to see what was going on, the top 50% of the letters that say Michelin MXX3 on the side wall were worn-out!! Even of you catch nail on the highway for example, they wont blow up at all, they will slowly leak untill they become so flat that you start noticing it, and sometimes its the next day you start your car in the garage. For them to blow up it has to be a really bad construction error like you say, but I havent heard of that happening to anyone I know on these type of max performance tires.

Let's hope the Firestone syndrome doesnt catch up with my S02's!!! Waz

POST 13Original post

But what a great idea! The self-monitoring tire pressure system would have a central air tank from which air could be applied or removed from any or all tires when pressure got too low or too high. I've experienced 10 psi gain during a track session, and that makes for some skatey driving. The system would sense that gain and draw off air pressure in that case. I had pressure release track wheels that would do that when the tire pressure got up to some preset level. You wouldn't have to ever check the air pressure in the tires; just look at the central air tank pressure gauge on the dash.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let's see here, an air pump supplying constant head (i mean pressure head, ok?!) to a rotating wheel.. Now that can only be done through a supply pipe going into the centers of the shafts for the traction wheels and probably thru a center inlet for the front ones; the wheels will be themselves perforated from the center to the a point on the perimeter to release the pressure to the inside of the tyres.. Now that has to be sealed enough with some i-dont-know-what ball bearings that can retain such a pressure while the tyres are rotating at a calculated 3000 rpms *if my calculations are right*.. Let's call on NASA, anyone?! Wael

POST 15Original post

Ok I'm not a NASA eng. but how is this for a solution to your stated problem. The rim could be manufactured in such a way as to have a hollow cavity between the tire and the outside world. A small mechanical pump could be designed to take advantage of the energy generated by the spinning tire to raise the preasure inside of the cavity to a given point. All it would do is pump air from the outside into the cavity via a valve. A valve could be placed on the rim to regulate preasure between the cavity and the tire. The current valve configuration outside of the tire could be used to vent air if too much preasure was in the tire. The entire unit would be self contained in the rim and could be done with little added weight given new technology that allows for "Hollow-spoke" type rims like Porsche already has. The rim wall for the cavity would not have to be very thick since the rim would till have it's normal construction to contain the air within the tire.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ohhhhh... my Goddddd!!!! Am shot!!!!!!! Ok, Armando i thing i got your point there.. you mean the rim itself will act like a centrifugal propeller of say, a water pump or the like.. is this what you mean by a cavity? like the rims will have two thicknesses along its diameter? I really dont get your point there.. Wael (scratching my head..)

POST 17Original post

Well, why dun you find out how the Hummer H1 CTIS (central tire inflation system) works? It's exactly what you guys are talking about. And as for S-02 tire blowout. I've had a S-02 blowout without any warning, and the pressure wasn't even low enough to visibly notice without measuring with a guage.
