Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

..when my car's not used for 2.5 weeks while I'm on holiday? It's a 996 C4 ('99). Should I just disconnect the battery or is there some other cleverer option out there? The car will be outside (UK Winter weather). Thanks in advance for all responses.

POST 2Original post

Get the Porsche trickle charger, about $100 or so. Plugs in the cigarette lighter and keeps the battery topped up.

POST 3Original post

the 996's have a smart shutdown procedure that powers off gradually the many electrical active components of the car. After a couple of weeks i guess, it'll put itself asleep and barely consumes any of your battery's power. The way I understand it from the manual, you can just lock it and leave it there. I'm sure you will find it the way it was when you left it. Wael 996 C2 99

POST 4Original post

If you bought your car from a dealer, I'd ask him to give you a charger at no cost to you. I got one free for my 99 Boxter, and another one free with my 02tt. AS

POST 5Original post

Or, make friends with a Volkswagen dealer. All brand new Volkswagens come from the port with a small solar panel (about 1 ft square) that keeps the battery charged. I've got one for my car and am going to lengthen the cord so I can hang it outside my garage.
