I use a V1 placed high on the windshield and plan to hot-wire it very shortly with the remote box on top of the steering column.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking in to purchasing a new radar detector. My old one failed me on a long stretch of interstate eight. Has anyone had any experiences, good or bad, with newer radar detectors? Where is the best placement for a 996? I have found a couple of reviews online but I do not trust the legitimacy of them. I live in the US, California specifically, and noticed that some of the responses from previous posts have been referring to detectors in the UK. I am wondering which detectors are good for the US specifically? Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andrew

POST 2Original post

Welcome Andrew. You might try a search because there have been many posts on this subject and everyone seems to have their own opinions as you would expect. I use a V1 placed high on the windshield and plan to hot-wire it very shortly with the remote box on top of the steering column.

Carlos from Spain is the expert - check out his posts on the subject. He helped me. Good luck

V-1 mounted hi passenger w/ velcro Remote on steering column hard wired to telephone connector drivers side tunnel

POST 6Original post

Valentine 1... the only way to fly. Mine is mounted just left of center low on the windshield. Need to hardwire it so I can place it near the top of the windshield. Don... [quote] I use a V1 placed high on the windshield and plan to hot-wire it very shortly with the remote box on top of the steering column.

I would love to go this route... any info you could provide would be most appreciated.

POST 8Original post

Definitely go with a Valentine One. I have mine hardwired and mounted high on the windsheild next the the rear view mirror.

POST 9Original post

V1...absolutely no question. Mine is hardwired and center mounted just below the mirror so it looks between the headrests for rear coverage. I bought a couple of extra sets of window mounts so I just have to switch the unit when changing vehicles. Frequent re & re of the glass suction cups degrades their performance. I run the V1 in the "logic" mode.

POST 10Original post

OK. Here's a dissenting vote. I have Passport 8500. I researched the whole thing about the time I took delivery of the car, Feb, 2002. There were, and I believe continue to be, 3 excellent choices. V1, Passport 8500, and Bel. Each have things the other don't have, but no real advantage to mean anything. They each have very vocal proponents. Depending on what you read and who you believe in, one of the 3 will be better at laser or specific radar band detection than the others. You can't go wrong with any of the three, IMHO. I have no regrets with Passport, and it has saved me numerous times. I chose Passport because I found the advertising of V1 too arrogant, and I believed the tests that reccomended Passport or Bel more than the test that reccomended V1. Just remember one thing, though. The detector is only an aide, regardless of how good, advanced, etc, it is. Situational awareness and common sense is still the key to avoiding speeding tickets.

POST 11Original post

Valentine 1. Mines on the passenger sunvisor with the remote unit on the steering column. I'm retired law enforcement and have done my own testing. Valentine 1 is by FAR better IMHO. My advice is buy one. Stay out of the left lane. Look far ahead. 9 times out of 10 if you are the only car in sight and you're hit with instant on or laser-you're screwed. Also, don't get a fancy vanity license plate-remember everybody has a cell phone these days and if you plan on blasting by cars at rediculous speeds someone is bound to call 911 and those stupid plates make it easier for you to be identified. Just my 2 cents

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you guys for the input. I am hearing an overwhelming response for the Valentine One. I was leaning toward the Valentine but was not sure, now I am convinced that it would be my best bet. Thanks, Andrew

POST 13Original post

Like all the others above....V1...paid for itself soooooooo many times......

POST 15Original post

I'll chime in. I have the Bel 8500, got it for under 200 bux on e-bay. It never gives false alarms in the K and Ka bands, which are the only bands cops use around here. So ANY K or Ka alert and I'm on the brakes. It gives me plenty of warning time. So IMO for half the V1 price I am very pleased.

POST 16Original post

V1 here too. i think all all seem to detect well enough, but once you get used to the directional signals telling you where the radar sources are from, you will never go back imho.
