Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

ATE 200 is also DOT 4, but gold instead of blue, makes it easy to know that you've changed fluids over.

I think if you don't have DOT4 you should replace the fluid simply because DOT4 is called for by Porsche and there might be some other difference that I'm unaware of.
Leading evidence: 'Replace fluids over' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace fluid simply' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The reason I don't recommend them for you is because they absorb water more quickly and have to be changed very regularly.

I just ordered one of each no problem, the purpose of the two colors is to be able to tell when you have completed the change of fluid in the system.

But I dont recommend you use anything but standard DOT4 fluid.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Please can anyone tell me what is the difference btwn dot3 and dot4 brake oil?
I am afraid the mechanic might have put dot3 in my brake oil reservoir although the new oil is of the same colour..
Thank you..

DOT 3 boils over at a lower temp than DOT 4. That translates to decreased brake capacity usually at the limit. Next time, get ATE Super Blue. It has a blue color to it, and it is DOT 4. Most die hards use that and swap with ATE 200 every other fluid change. ATE 200 is also DOT 4, but gold instead of blue, makes it easy to know that you've changed fluids over.
Does this mean that my brake system can fail somewhere if i use dot3 to top the dot4 inside my reservoir? do they mix? old fairy tale says that the rubbers of the clutch and brake pumps will wear due to dot3 use..

I just ordered one of each no problem, the purpose of the two colors is to be able to tell when you have completed the change of fluid in the system. The blue is technically not DOT approved due to the color (how stupid is that)
Waz,
The major difference between DOT3 and DOT4 is the boiling point. This will affect the point at which the brakes overheat and the peddle goes to the floor (though on cast iron rotor systems the pads will usually fade before the fluid boils).
DOT3 can sometimes be necessary for some very old cars which have natural rubber. Mostly these are old English cars and not Porsche. But otherwise DOT4 is always preferable.
I think if you don't have DOT4 you should replace the fluid simply because DOT4 is called for by Porsche and there might be some other difference that I'm unaware of.
They do mix.
ATE Blue and other racing DOT4 fluids can be a very good idea. I personally prefer Castrol SRF much more expensive but a better wet boiling point.
But I dont recommend you use anything but standard DOT4 fluid. The reason I don't recommend them for you is because they absorb water more quickly and have to be changed very regularly. Not something you want in a tropical third world country. So unless you are having problems with boiling fluid (a race track issue) I would stick with a standard DOT4 fluid. I suppose that advice goes for everyone really, if race DOT4 isn't necessary then don't use it.
Always make sure that your mechanic only uses fluid from a previously unopened can. It absorbs water very quickly once it has been exposed to air.

OK S, thanks for the info. I guess i'll never reach driving conditions for my brake oil to reach boiling point.. I have no mountains and no race tracks.. but i do understand the water issue though..

Hi Ed:
Better get that Super Blue while you can,....what is on the shelf is it. The Feds stopped the importation of this product about 4 months ago.
