Its had the retro IMS kit installed (2011 and supposedly again in 2018 but see no evidence of that.

When I replaced the fronts, I switched to 225/40/19s (all are Michelin Pilot Sport 4Ss) which keeps the diameters 0.1 different front to rear.

First things will be removing the side panels this weekend to get the seat belts out and sent to SafetyRestore to repair before reinstalling.

I have pretty limited experience wrenching on cars other than the occasional oil change but going to get my hands dirty with my 996.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
new premium member here. Purchased a heavily modified 02 996 C4S and I believe my center console was replaced at some point. (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-porsche-911-carrera-4s-coupe-35/)
Was the 996.1 center console shorter? Or is this potentially from a Boxster?
Car runs great and just gave it a full comprehensive service but it had a roll cage at one point (causing the heavy scratches on the seat backs) and the rear seat belts are locked and wont unwind too. No surprise my local Porsche dealership wanted $3700 to replace the two belts.
any insight on the center console would be great!
UPDATE
: Loving this community! Thanks all for the feedback and suggestions.
Thats a convertible or Boxster console. Coupes and targas have an extension piece on the back. You can buy just the extension and the longer side panels for that one.
Thanks for identifying that. A little perplexed why a previous owner would swap it out but more incentive to look into a CF console or color matched console.
This seems like a suspicious car. Roll cage and locked out rear seat belts, odd interior parts. This thing was crashed at some point. It may have been someones track toy. I may be wrong but that also looks like a 986 gauge cluster. Subtle differences between the 996 and 986.
guess it doesnt really matter much as long as the price was right and it drives well. Enjoy!
Congrats on the C4S!
The previous owner may have damaged the center console when removing the roll bar and just bought another one on ebay from a Boxster, not realizing it was missing the extension. Then never added it.
Just give the car a good lookover to make sure everything is in order. The good news is you can find alot of parts in ebay and plenty of threads here in Rennlist for just about any upgrade project.
You know the routine if you havent already done it.
1. Drop the sump to see whats in it
2. Cut open the oil filter to see whats in it
3. Test the oil to see whats in it
4. Scope the bores to see the condition
And then do all of the necessary preventative stuff.
1. IMSB upgrade to the LN Solution or Retro
2. AOS upgrade to the UAOS w/Track drain
3. Replace your water pump
4. Run high quality oil and change it at least 2x a year
Yes, that center console has been swapped out. The big give away is the discoloration between the ash tray and console. Lots of the Post 2002 consoles were painted with a rubberized paint that did NOT hold up over time. Looked awful when the paint would flake. Similar to what you see on the backs of your sport seats. It's clear from looking at your interior photos that you have the full leather package (leather dash, gauge cover, door panels, etc.) and so your original factory center console should have been overlayed with black leather with the characteristic center stitch similar to what you see on the e-brake lever.
The replacement console that is currently in your car is definitely missing the rear piece and appears to be painted GRANITE GREY. Granite grey was a very durable painted surface that was found in the early '99 cars.
That's the correct gauge cluster. The original factory option sticker shows the aluminum gauge trim option (
X71 Alu-look instrument faces)
, but the original factory trim appear to be swapped out with aftermarket aluminum trim because the trim is BLOCKING the gauge info. Porsche would never design it that way. Yuck!
OP, with a little TLC, you'll be able to bring it back to a nice new like finish. I would start on the cracked windshield. Then, replace the center console with a period correct version in black or even go with the factory silver metallic painted version. Great contrast!
For sure. Or you can even paint it the same color as your exterior which will also look very good. Plenty of aftermarket companies that sell carbon fiber center console and bits as well, depending on what the look is that you are going for. Quite frankly, its alot of fun making the car "your" car.
The price felt good to me. Its had the retro IMS kit installed (2011 and supposedly again in 2018 but see no evidence of that. Filter is clear of debris and had a comprehensive service last week by Stuttgart Southwest).
definitely some issues with the car I intend to fix:
1. New seat backs in CF or silver coat
2. Replace center console with period correct version in CF, silver or leather
3. send rear seatbelts to SafetyRestore and reinstall (I have two young lads and whole reason I went 911 over Cayman was so we can all go cruise)
4. Remove K&N filter and replace with original airbox or 997 version
5. New rims and tires. The previous owner powder coated these three-piece forged rims and I am not a fan at all. Shame since the rims are really nice but quotes to remove the coating and restore to any degree will cost more than a brand new set of BBS or Apex rims. Also, this car is running 235/35/19 fronts and 315/25/19 rears and hard to find new tire sets for. Going to reduce rears to 295 width.
6. Remove tint on rear headlights. Maybe replace with lighter tint. I mean no offense to anyone but my 996 looks a little too riced out for my liking and doesnt work with the center cut exhaust.
7. Paint correction and ceramic coating. Minor issues to the paint but can use some TLC
8. No change to exhaust). Its a nice system and sounds amazing even if Im not a fan of the center cut exhaust. Rear bumper was cut and plugged so the cost to convert is too high
9.
Same car and original rims before powder coating
(no change to wing). It is growing on me and again cost to replace too high to justify.
100%
The car has minimal history since 2018 so I took it in for a comprehensive service last week and came back with flying colors.
IMS retro done in 2011 and supposedly again in 2018 but no record of the latter. Technician stated he sees no concerns or had a retro fail but its a personal choice whether I want to install again. If I do Ill go with solution over retro.
water pump and clutch replaced in 2018 and just over 10k miles of wear since. I believe AOS was done too but good call there.
Yep, cracked windshield is already on order and definitely replacing this console. Great call on the silver metallic. I want to redo or replace the seat backs in silver metallic or CF too. Seat belts are #1 priority for now so I can take the family on a cruise.
My C4S came with 235/35/19s and 295/30/19s. When I replaced the fronts, I switched to 225/40/19s (all are Michelin Pilot Sport 4Ss) which keeps the diameters 0.1 different front to rear. Far as I remember, thats the same variance the stock tires have albeit an inch smaller in diameter.
Good call on the fronts. Ive been eyeing the Michelins too or the Conti ExtremeContacts. I have 9 year old Toyo Proxes T1Rs on it now. Plenty of tread but obviously past useful life.
There are lots of ways to make actually using these cars affordable. Using your own hands instead of laying stacks of bills in somebody elses is the best way IMHO. Skimping on B-grade mechanical parts should not be one of them. Do your research on here, get opinions, find the best source for what you need at the time.
^^^^100%.....In my 53 years of driving and owning 50-60 cars, my 996 has been driven the hardest and I have owned it the longest ( 17 years) and it has been the most dependable of them all with the lowest cost of ownership ( if you DIY ) ...The labor nowadays is the most expensive part of ownership..
Congrats on joining the Party !!!
I'll give my recommendations ( spend your money) after you get the cosmetic like you want on some "hard core" parts...
I have pretty limited experience wrenching on cars other than the occasional oil change but going to get my hands dirty with my 996. First things will be removing the side panels this weekend to get the seat belts out and sent to SafetyRestore to repair before reinstalling.
I need to buy a quickjack too!
