Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Need some help please, Im new on this forum and pretty new to owning a 911. I own a 996 turbo since a few months now and since last week my battery was completely dead. I thought I might had left something on which consumed electricity while the car was off orsomething, so I jumpstarted it with my Vito. The car started immediatly and I used the car the entire day to charge up the battery, it started by itself again and it all seemed ok. Three days later the battery was again dead, I couldnt even get the hood opened up to reach the battery. After I figured out how to open it with jumpstarters I again tryed to start the car with the help of my mercedes vito. This time the car ran for a few seconds and then shut off, with the cables still attached. I tryed it a few more times but it kept happening. The startermotor doesnt make any weird noises and seems to be functioning just fine. It just wont fire up or when it finnaly does it wont keep running. So after some research I thought it might be the alternator. I read that a broken alternator could also cause a battery to drain when the car is off, which would explain that. If it would be caused by something like a shortage of fuell orsomething, how come my battery gets drained overnight? Is there a way I could measure some things while the car isnt starting anymore that could tell me what exact parts have to be replaced? Thanks in advance! Niels

A dead battery that you charge up and which dies again is a dead battery. Once fully discharged, lead acid batteries become unreliable at best. To diagnose this, you will need what is called a Volt-Ohm meter (VOM) that can also measure current. You should be able to get one at the car parts place where you will be buying a new battery. Install new battery. Connect negative side. Set the VOM to Amps. Connect the plus side to the battery and the minus side to the positive cable and measure the current being sucked out of the battery. It should be about 100milliamps (someone check me on this number). If it is in the range of 1 amp or more, then you have something draining the battery. At that point you may want to get professional help, but don't leave the battery connected because it will kill the new battery as well. Others will chime in here.
