Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My dad is looking at a few '99 models and he really hates the light grey trim around the vents and center console with black interior. Is it possible/not too expensive to order those parts from a later model in black finish? What about getting the 02+ matte finish buttons?
Those are the only things he doesn't like about the 99 model and the 99's significant cost advantage makes it worth the hassle of switching the parts.
I know what you mean. When I ordered my '99 I ordered all the dash plastic & center console in leather, and changed out the shift/brake for carbon. Some '02 trim is interchangeable with the '99 trim but not all. I know for a fact that the center dash '02 trim mounts differently than the '01 and earlier trim and can not be interchanged. You can however have the '99 trim removed and painted, or order '99 replacement trim in carbon or wood. I'm not sure if leather covered '99 trim is still available. You would have to ask a dealer to confirm that.
MY 99 trim can be upgraded with any 99 - 01 trim. The center dash trim mounting changed in MY 02 so anything MY 02 or newer will not work on an older car.
Does anyone know how much the regular black plastic console, vent surrounds, and center stack surround cost? My dad is looking very seriously at a 99 with black interior and we both decided the grey has to go.
I agree. I quit looking at 1999's because of the cheesy dash pieces. You can also go with aluminum. Any way you decide will cost you (even replacing with factory black). I've seen a few "painted" 996 pieces that looked great (in artic silver but also in gun metal and exterior colors). That may be the ticket. I went the alum route couldn't be happier.
FWIW, I know that TechArt will cover most anything you send them in leather matched to your interior. It's costly tho. They quoted $350 to cover a plastic ash-tray delete plastic piece in Metropol Blue leather. Needless to say I didn't do it because of the cost
If you knock around in eBay a bit you will see that Gemballa does all of those pieces in aluminum-look (plaluminum, i.e. the stock shifter) on an exchange basis. The pics there in fact show a black interior overdone in the stuff.
For sure I think you are on the right track looking at '99s if you plan to make changes.
Personally, I would do three things: keep looking at cars since you might find one with a carbon interior upgrade practically for free; do not forget to get an estimate on the potentially significant round trip labor to change out those pieces; live with the car a while before personalizing it since your thinking/priorities might change.
