b) even without a jack the engine will not fall down, it will rest on the suspension cross bar as long as the rear engine mounts are still connected (wouldn't recommend leaving it too long like this though, it's a bit too much angle)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a request for the cheapo engine support brace I made for about $20 vs. the one for $279. If anyone else is interested, I can post a simple do it yourself for it. I know the measurements have been posted before but I took a little different route (as usual for me). I may even build another one from scratch just for fun and the DIY.

POST 2Original post

this is certain to thrill your many adoring fans.

POST 3Original post

I'd be interested in a DIY. Does it require welding knowledge?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

odurandina, shouldnt you be over in OT posting more of your ingenious observations such as this instead of wasting your valuable time here in the 996 forum? Yes, and its nothing fancy. Just a way to avoid paying the $279 for one.

POST 6Original post

As a starter, can you please post a pic of this contraption?

POST 7Original post

I found this one. KK is the driver....

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pete, those guys rule the forklift world but seriously, thought you might enjoy a photo of me measuring an engine to make the support brace then a photo of me composing the DIY so that even you could understand it!

POST 10Original post

You look just like I thought you would Looking forward to seeing what this is.

POST 12Original post

Are you in talks with Pelican on this one too? I thought we would've seen pics by now.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Imre, it looks like the one sold on ebay, etc. for $279 but its home cut and MIG welded for @$20.

POST 14Original post

The one I purchased on Ebay was $179 and was built well. Nice piece of work and well worth the cost. The engine height adjustment came in very handy for getting access to the upper bolts. I am not sure the time spent fabricating/welding one up would have been cost effective for me at least. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Suppo...-/380607046136

Exactly what I plan to buy if and when I do the clutch.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 10599878

you really don't need this to do a clutch. a) if you want to support your engine while the transmission is out your jack will do it just fine - you can put a 2x4 under the jack if you are worried it's going to go down b) even without a jack the engine will not fall down, it will rest on the suspension cross bar as long as the rear engine mounts are still connected (wouldn't recommend leaving it too long like this though, it's a bit too much angle) The real use for this bar is if you plan to move the car while the transmission is out or if you plan on leaving the transmission out for a while, otherwise it's absolutely not necessary, especially if you're just doing a clutch/IMS/AOS job. Also lining up the transmission when you put it back will be much easier if you can play with the engine height, which you can do with a jack but not with the support bar we discuss here

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is a very bad way to do this. It puts an incredible amount of stress on motor mounts, hoses, lines, etc.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 10600208

yes, agree, motor mounts are the main issue (hoses and lines have enough slack). I actually blew one of my OEM motor mounts like this before switching to semi-solid motor mounts. this is why I was saying not to leave it like this any amount of time. but you will want that "extreme" angle to get to the couple top bolts of the transmission on the passenger side, makes it a lot easier (a lot easier meaning it goes from dead impossible to a real pain to reach with long extensions)

POST 19Original post

I have a mid-rise lift so this should make the job easier. Also see this thread. The bar allows you to tilt the engine to line it up with the trans https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...yesterday.html

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 10601951

now that's a good reason to buy the bar. If you're lucky enough to have a lift the "jack under the engine" method isn't going to help much.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 10601951

Is your lift a mid-rise scissors? With your ride height, is there anything special you need to do to drive over it?

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 10602138

With stock ride height I could just drive on the 4" built-in ramps. With x74 (currently) I have to stick some 2x4's under the ramps https://rennlist.com/forums/7759429-post35.html

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahsai, does your lift cause a problem in dropping the engine and trans as one unit?

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 10603513

I haven't tried it yet but I don't expect any problems since the middle of the lift is completely open between the two ramps. What do you think? IMG_8886%20(Medium).JPG IMG_8888%20(Medium).JPG

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, looks like you could, if you have room for an ATV jack or other under there. Awesome, bet you cant wait to remove it.

POST 26Original post

Holy Cow Ahsai, I think your underside might be "almost" as clean as KK's. which has me wondering if you drive your car a lot or not.

Every single weekday and wish for more. About 7k ayr I happen to enjoy both driving AND wrenching...

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 10604344

Part of me yes. I don't mind driving more and wrenching only when needed though. I wish I had your energy

POST 29Original post

$20? I would never spend that much. Made this one for under $12:

POST 30Original post

^^^^^I can top that!!!! Made something similar for the 928. Left over 4x4 that came with the house and a small hydraulic jack to lift the engine AND a ratcheting strap. Total cost.....$0.00

He will run into problems getting the ATV jack over the blue pipe that runs along the bottom of the car lift.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 10606816

Yes, may need to build a wood platform to go over it. In fact, even dropping the transmission I may need to face this problem. Will see.
