I was surprised to find the old bulb not visibly damaged (no rattle when shaken, so visible filament separation, etc..) BUT, I replaced the bulb, reassembled the assembly.

Suggestion
So, one of the things you could check, along with the bulb socket, would be that the headlight assy is seated fully and that there are no broken/bent or damaged pins/sockets in the main plug or the mating plug on the headlight.

I didn't inspect it very carefully but the connector seemed fine and the bulb seated cleanly when I replaced it, still I'll pull it out and check things over again.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Outcome without a verified action link
It worked with the key turned but engine not running, than an hour later when I started the car and drove, it didn't work the first time I tried to signal a left turn.
This morning I replaced the left front turn signal bulb, easy job thanks to the suggestions here. I was surprised to find the old bulb not visibly damaged (no rattle when shaken, so visible filament separation, etc..) BUT, I replaced the bulb, reassembled the assembly. Inserted the key and turned it to "run" without starting the engine, and.... Voila - success.
I got out of the car and visibly verified both turn lights, all good.
One hour later, I start the car and head out to the cafe. When I signal a left turn leaving my neighborhood - fast blinking! This continues whether I hold the lever for a short lane change or switch it to indicate a left turn. At the cafe I checked the lights visually - everything is fine except no left turn signal, just like before....
I shutoff the car and tried it with the ignition in "run" but the engine off - no luck.
Any ideas???? Unless the new bulb burned out when I started the car or on the initial left signal with the car running.... its something else - and that worries me.
Can't be a fuse, can it? If the fuse was blown it couldn't have worked immediately after I replaced the bulb.
What is different with the car running or off - alternator?
Battery is good, voltmeter responds as expected (I think). No other issues at present.
Appreciate any ideas - just when I thought I'd saved $150 and a trip to my indy (which burns half of a workday that I can't afford to lose right now.)
-Lawrence
when you opened the socket to replace the bulb, did you look in there?
in my case the blinker was actually NOT the bulb, but the socket the bulb goes in. Seems the seal had allowed water to get in there (and with no drain) it rusted the little connector clean off. I used some cleaverly crafted tin foil as a temp fix while I sourced a socket ($900 from Porsche because you have to replace the entire headligh??????) found one at DC Auto in N.Y. for $15 !
you might look in there and check the contacts for signs of water/rust ???? maybe a little sand paper to clean the contact surfaces will make it work
Ed - thanks, I'll do that. But the funny thing is that immediately after replacing the bulb and reinserting the headlight - it actually worked!! It worked with the key turned but engine not running, than an hour later when I started the car and drove, it didn't work the first time I tried to signal a left turn. Something funny happened or happening with the engine running possibly?
I didn't inspect it very carefully but the connector seemed fine and the bulb seated cleanly when I replaced it, still I'll pull it out and check things over again.
Thanks!
it hard to imagine the pulb burned out - so I suspect a connection. its possible that its just corroded enough to have work temporarilly and then stop. If not the socket maybe the act of removing the headlight assy and replacing it made the contact on the "plug" connect too... take a look at that connection as well (IIRC there is a plastic clip that holds the plug on the bracket that can break and make the plug not fully seat)
- to clear that up I mean the main plug on the car to the main headlight assy
Lawrence, when I got my car the L/H parking bulb was out.
I replaced it and on the very next drive that side turnsignal light was inop.
When I got out of the car I smacked the headlight assy rearward to seat it into the plug in the chassis and it has worked ever since.
So, one of the things you could check, along with the bulb socket, would be that the headlight assy is seated fully and that there are no broken/bent or damaged pins/sockets in the main plug or the mating plug on the headlight.
If you are run out of things to do you could also swap side to side the turn signal bulbs to verify bulb operation.
Good luck, Brian
