Suggestion

If you do want to go ahead with the conversion, you'll still have visible remnants of the tip system or even higher parts cost to replace the tip display dash and steering wheel.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Searching through the forum history, there was at least 1 semi-success (someone asking about throttle bodies not opening, DME was missing speed input) and ton of misinformation (needing a new dash etc). I'm not confident in the long term reliability of the mbenz trans (torque converter specifically, I'm at 115K) and I'm thinking eventually I'll go down the conversion route. Budget-wise I should be able to wrap it up for under 3-4K net cost of parts.

POST 2Original post

Up here just a used transmission is $2500. I'm not sure you can pull it off for $4000.

Yeah, $2K for trans, maybe another $2K for masters/slave, pedal and clutch. Still gotta see if the axles are the same on the 6speeds. You end up with at least $2K of parts (tip trans, mount, shifter blah blah), so your budget is really $6K

POST 4Original post

Unless your 996 is amazingly special, I can't imagine the 'upgrade' cost of selling your current one and purchasing an as-nice or nicer 6-speed wouldn't be easier and less expensive than retrofitting a six speed into a factory tip car. Could 'reset' your mileage back down to 60K or so at the same time.... ----- If you do want to go ahead with the conversion, you'll still have visible remnants of the tip system or even higher parts cost to replace the tip display dash and steering wheel. Functionally, I wonder how the electronic control systems in the car would respond by swapping transmissions. The tiptronic control unit almost certainly communicating with other control systems and would likely require at a minimum some reprogramming, possibly swapping out modules. Might be a bit easier if you have an early pre e-gas car.

It's pretty special from the perspective of everything being up to date, great options, 2005 factory engine with 997 IM bearing and I will not find a car anywhere near the price I got this one for.
