Reported cause
Problem is very few of them that I've found (and I've searched alot) handle frequencies below 300MHz.
Leading evidence: 'very few of them' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'very few of them' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install on most top-end vehicles' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Too bad, I really want to have it installed on my sun visor.

By the way, I replaced my ash tray with a Porche "Non-smoker's Tray" in which fits my Motorola V.60c flip-phone.

I've just dug through all my bookmarked sites and can't find it now, but someone has posted install instructions on the web which use a "Clicker" universal remote control (http://www.hooverfence.net/access/radio/clicker/) and then wire it up to one of the unused rocker switches in the console.

You use a two step procedure, the first to "train" the remote to the correct frequency, and the second to bring it into sychronization with the "rolling code".
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been obsessing, <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> , on how to neatly integrate a HomeLink garage/gate opener into my 996 C2 Cab, on order, & I believe that I have come up with a solution that will have a real OEM look. HomeLink garage/gate openers are standard or factory installed on most top-end vehicles but unfortunately, not on Porsches
, nor are they available for sale directly from HomeLink. HomeLink garage/gate openers are the only units, to my knowledge, that allow easy progamming of three independant frequencies including the more recently introduced "rolling code" frequencies. (<a href="http://www.homelink.com" target="_blank">HomeLink</a>)
JP Customs, a truck & SUV accessories supplier located at 15806 Congo Ln., Houston, Texas 77040, <a href="http://www.jpcustoms.com" target="_blank">JP Custom Web Page</a>, <a href="http://[email removed]" target="_blank">JP Customs E-mail</a>, offers a unit depicted below & at the link provided, that I believe can be installed in a 996 or 986 visor. The price is $160.
The unit measures about 3.5"x2.5"x5/8". The face plate and buttons mount perpendicular to the 3.5" measurement. It requires 2 wires for power, power (+) and ground (-), so we would probably be able to connect into our vanity mirror lights for this.
I will most probably do this mod to my car when it arrives in the next month & I will post pictures & procedure at that time. If you get to this before me please share you experience. <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

I bought a garage door opener with three buttons and a self contained battery at home depot for about $30 and velcroed it to the roof immediately behind the sunroof switch.
The problem with most "universal" remotes is that they have a limited frequency range. HomeLink overcomes this in their electronics with a wider frequency range and the ability for each of the three buttons to be programmed to a different frequency. For me this is critical as the gated community I live in has a front gate at a lower frequency than my house's parking area gate and garage door.
Most new remotes are truly "universal". You use a two step procedure, the first to "train" the remote to the correct frequency, and the second to bring it into sychronization with the "rolling code".
Problem is very few of them that I've found (and I've searched alot) handle frequencies below 300MHz. The ones that do force you to use the same frequency for all buttons (Remocon). I've just dug through all my bookmarked sites and can't find it now, but someone has posted install instructions on the web which use a "Clicker" universal remote control (http://www.hooverfence.net/access/radio/clicker/) and then wire it up to one of the unused rocker switches in the console. This is the cleanest and least obtrusive garage door opener I have seen. Maybe someone on the board has the URL???
Richard,
I was at the dealer yesterday and noticed that the Audi A6 has a very clean and low profile homelink setup in the driver's visor. Don't know if the visor will fit the 996, but maybe worth a look. Also, the TT may be an option. I would think that to only issue would be lining up the clip.

I've got a HomeLink unit on order from JP Customs & I will post the installation pictures when done. My main problem with the install, so far, is that I haven't taken delivery of my C2 Cab yet.

There was a similar topic discussed on CFG's board about 6 weeks ago. I called the people selling the part you bought and told them to go buy a Porsche sun visor and try an install for us. They said they would do it and call me back with the results. Since I never got a call back I assume that it does not work

Please find brief instructions on how I finally hooked up the HomeLink Garage/Gate Transmitter System in my 02 C2 Cab. The unit as purchased from JP Customs is too large to fit inside a Carrera sun visor so I chose to place the unit, depicted below,
in the space beneath the lower package shelf of the console and tap wires off the Homelink circuit board switches to 2 OEM central locking switches attached to a 4 position switch plate (available from Porsche Parts) located just above the shifter in the vehicle.
Power for unit was tapped off the constantly live lighter receptacle. Soldering switch wires to circuit board involved gingerly touching solder tinned wires to switch connection points with a cool (25 watt) soldering iron with a pointy iron head. Wires were secured to board by use of hot glue gun glue applications.
Back of switches are depicted with colored dots corresponding to the orange, purple, white, grey & green wire connections.
Programming of the HomeLink unit is accomplished with unit in hand, removed from console, by use of The actual Homelink unit switches & indicator light, per instructions supplied by HomeLink with the unit.
Regards,
Richard
Guys,
There's a much, much simpler way to go - not as fun or as challenging though I admit.
We have a Genie rolling code garage door opener and they sell a key chain transmitter at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. This fits perfectly in the ashtray allowing the cover to close. Total cost around $30 and you have a concealed opener in a convenient spot.
The HomeLink in my C2 operates 2 garage at different locations & a gate to my complex, all devices being from different manufacturers with differing frequency ranges. HomelLink transmitters, from Johnson Controls, as installed on most better vehicles at the factory (but unfortunately not Porsches) handle these universal situations, as in my instance, better than any other universal transmitter out there.
By the way, I replaced my ash tray with a Porche "Non-smoker's Tray" in which fits my Motorola V.60c flip-phone.
Regards,
Richard
Does anyone have experience with the Sesame garage door opener product from Sharkworks? From their web site: [quote]Sesame uses a genuine Porsche rocker switch that plugs directly into any unused space in your switch panel. Great stock look. Available in matte and glossy finish. Directly supports most garage door openers including rolling code /security+.<hr></blockquote> <a href="http://www.sharkworks.com" target="_blank">Sharkworks</a>
They also have something called, "TouchTop" for a single touch control of the cab's softtop. Looks very interesting to me; no more holding that button until the job's done!
Question for Richard in Colorado, sorry if this is off topic but, noted your choice of location for your phone. Is it just resting there or is it powered and part of a hands freee installation?

Checked out the Sharkworks setup. They must be out of their minds to charge $225!!! What a rip.
Anyway, to Richard, all you need is a bike mate and with the Porsche and the allroad we could really compare notes. My wife and I absolutely loves our allroad. We have it in Atlas Grey also.
Mav - Another allroad owner!!
What's going on, where's the link. There are 3 Porsche owners here posting away who also own allroads. There's also a guy in the Cayenne board (mpm) and cabboy also. There's 5 I found just in the past few hours..
