I have fitted an IMS guardian without problem and I'm really happy with it but it regularly alarms after a mile or so of driving and then stops.
Leading evidence: 'Install ims guardian without problem and i'm really happy' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect debris' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I quantified this a few months ago when someone sold a 996 and then about two weeks later the same seller sold his "used" IMS Guardian kit.

Suggestion
If the unit alarms in the same way every time change the fuse position that feeds it and swap the orange wire to another connection point.

There are different intensities of alert from the IMSG, the press to test feature allows the user to hear the intensity of what a full alert would sound like.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Gentlemen,
I wonder if anyone could offer any advice or if they've had a similar problem. I have fitted an IMS guardian without problem and I'm really happy with it but it regularly alarms after a mile or so of driving and then stops. It always tests ok and other than the initial couple of miles is fine. Has anyone had a similar problem? If so I'd appreciate any advice.
After everything you read here, why not just fix the problem rather than band-aid it? The IMSB-G is a great idea in theory but for the price, you've covered an IMSB replacement so I don't get the logic. $400+
Well firstly I didn't pay $400 for it, considerably less actually, it didn't cost me anything to fit as it's an easy DIY and I believe it can sense other failures from debris. Do you know what the issue is? that's what the initial question was about by the way? That was really the replies I was looking for.
Had the unit been previously installed before you bought it? If the unit alarms in the same way every time change the fuse position that feeds it and swap the orange wire to another connection point.
It may be "real" because a piece of debris is moving between the contacts in turbulent oil. The IMSG saved an engine like this about 3 months ago with the same sort of scenario. What ailed that engine was a failing timing chain, which was caught in time but had a similar alert scenario as yours has exhibited. It was even consistent.
Did you pull the sump plate to clean it during install?
If that doesn't do it give us a ring for support.
Isn't the point of this alarm to notify you to immediately stop driving it until further diagnosis? If you're ignoring or putting it off, I don't really see the point of having it.
I hope it doesn't end up on the Carmax lot.
I seriously dislike the fact that the IMSG car turned into a "trade in device". Too many people have received alerts that were positive and then put the car up for sale. I quantified this a few months ago when someone sold a 996 and then about two weeks later the same seller sold his "used" IMS Guardian kit. I went back through the logs and then found where a name similar to his username had called in an IMS Alert that I had personally supported. The phone number from the alert log matched that of his phone number supplied with the car for sale.
There are different intensities of alert from the IMSG, the press to test feature allows the user to hear the intensity of what a full alert would sound like. Anything less than full intensity is generally ferro-magnetic "fuzz" that is creating a partial alert. This can be from not cleaning the oil sump at install as prescribed, going too far between oil services (the IMSG was developed around a 5K mile service interval) or imminent failure. The imminent failures that create more ferro-magnetic fuzz than "chips" are generally related to camshafts and lifters.
This guy didn't pay attention to the alert as he was headed to the airport and was late. He accepted full responsibility for what happened as a result. He looked at the failure as an opportunity to leverage his wife into letting him have the big bore 4.0 engine from us that he had already been inquiring about.
Thanks for your reply,
the alarm always happens in the same area as I leave my home, it's almost the same position every time. With regards to the question of whether or not you should stop driving immediately, I did this twice when it first happened and dropped the oil and found nothing. I know when it will alarm now so I don't panic at that point, if it alarms after that then I will panic. I will look at swapping connections around as you advise Jake and I appreciate you replying to me, and as for the product I'm genuinely pleased with it, these minor problems will get sorted I'm sure. I will let you know what I find, thanks again.
I also meant to add that my cars done 105,000 miles, just thought I should mention it as so many owners seem to be scared of driving them. That's the original engine as well and never needed a rear main seal either, how many other owners feel so positive about their 996 I wonder?
You're preaching to the choir. 125k, original engine, original IMS(speculating i have a single row based on class action lawsuit), Mobil 1, no additional cooling mods, etc.
A $250 Guardian Jr. IMHO is
perfect
for 996 owners...
As Jake has mentioned in other threads and the LN web site, magnetic chip detection can save you from more than just an IMS bearing failure, but it sounds *really good* at providing early detection (before engine damage) of that particular bearing coming apart.
For me, here is the ideal strategy for the vast majority of 996 owners...
Drive your car. Enjoy your car.
Drop your oil pan, inspect for debris, clean.
Install Guardian Jr. $250.
Change your oil at 5K intervals.
Drive your car. Enjoy your car.
If and when you ever need to drop your transmission for a clutch or other service, upgrade/replace the IMSB.
Keep the guardian installed, it can also early-detect other potential engine failure modes.
Drive your car. Enjoy your car.
And did I mention, drive and enjoy your car.
I baffles me that you don't promote the Guardian Jr. just because you have knowledge of someone dumping their car after it went off. Every day that people dump cars without disclosing known problems... The net benefit of your Guardian system including benefits *beyond* just detecting an IMSB failure, coupled with its quite low cost, makes it a golden ticket for 996 owners.
And the $250 cost? That's less than a DIY oil change plus one of your spin-on filter adapters... An absolute no brainer in my book..
Thats not the case. I am not big on "promoting" anything these days, and we have gotten completely away from selling our products directly, except my engines.
.
I agree and people call me routinely and say "I just want to fix this thing and sell it". When that happens I won't help them at all, because I refuse to be part of that type of activity.
I concur, but these days I have learned that people are so sensitive that I can't even mention these or other benefits of a system without being titled a "promoter" by the vendor haters that populate the internet world so heavily these days.
I agree, and I would even if it wasn't my development.
Hi Don,
how are you? Don't worry about this minor issue, the cars running really well and with a bit of peace of mind with the guardian installed. I obviously fitted it myself as I couldn't wait for you to fit it any longer.
Best wishes mate.
