Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They look much better and dont have the stretched out look that the 265's had. I now actually have some rim protection. I have not seen how the handling is affected yet, I have the Pirelli Rosso's by the way.

POST 3Original post

Don, 285/30 x 18 fit fine on the standard 10" wheels (I've got Sport Design with Bridgestone S03).

POST 4Original post

There's any big difference between the '18 in 265 against 285 ? When I changed from the '17 to my '18 wheels i found a bit less confortable handling , but a increase of grip.. tks.

POST 5Original post

Looks great, Don! Tell me, how has the handling changed and do you have any clearance problems? I've got the Turbo-look 18" and was thinking of putting on exactly those tires. What did you go with for the front tires and what is that front wheel size?

POST 6Original post

Kerry, it was Silver1.8T that put the tires on and Loren who posted the pics.

POST 7Original post

Kerry, I guess your question is for me... My front wheels are 8" (same as GT3) and rears are 10" (standard) SportDesign Wheels. There are no clearance problems as this is the exact wheel tire setup as the GT3. The fronts have 225/40 x 18 S03s and rears are 285/30 x 18 S03s. The fronts have a slightly larger contact patch now with the same tire as the rim is 0.5" wider. Doesn't sound like much but I wanted the wider fronts to counter the additional understeer I knew the 285s were going to give me... and I think they do. The handling difference is night and day to me. The car with the old Contis and smaller wheels and tires seemed like it was sliding more that sticking... now there is much more stick. IMHO... these tires (sizes and rims) with ROW030 suspension will make this car handle great.

POST 8Original post

I don't about the C4's doing the bigger tire thing...I thought it affected your 4wd stuff... make sure the tires are at least the same height as before or your computer will give you fits... RPM ratio will be off front to back and it will act funny. I run 245-35x18 fronts and 285-30x18 rear... no clearance problems at all..none Car is even 1.75 inches lower too. Still no problems. My car did come with the fenders rolled at the factory. (You got that if you got the sports design wheels in 2000). BUt I have seen other 996 using the same sizes as me. Reason to go from 17 to 18 is less side wall. Less flex and better performance in turns....also you end up with a wider tire patch on the ground with is always a better deal if your a guy who loves driving through the S's....

POST 9Original post

Sorry about that, Don. I was confused. Thanks for the insight, Loren. Since I have the standard 7.5x18 Turbo-look front wheels (and a C4) I might just be getting more understeer by bumping up the rear tires.

POST 10Original post

I just had my car fitted with 285/30 P-zero rossos(18x10) and ordered(already installed) the 18x8(had stock 18x7.5) front turbo look rims to offset understeer which Loren et al has recommended. Haven't tried testing it but sure looks good. No clearance issues at all(looks like you could fit bigger ones too : )!!!)-nah wide enough for me!!! Should do well on the track with the bigger contact patch-can't wait!!!! Regards. Mike

POST 11Original post

There is actually plenty of room for larger wheels/tires if you are so inclined. I use a combination of 265f/285r Pilot Sport Cups on the track. They are mounted on 9/10.5x18 K28s. The weight is a little troubling but the grip is great. I wouldn't suggest such a setup on the street though.
