Suggestion

Maybe if I build a hoist it will be used more often, but it isn't a daily driver, and with the highly predictable weather we have in the Bay Area, the need is probably minimal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone, I'm looking to pickup a hardtop for my cab. I have an A6 wagon, but not sure it will be big enough to haul the cab hard top. So I'm wondering if you think I'll be able to put it on the porsche, fasten the front catch, and at least take it home. Would it be heavy enough to make it back, or is it likely to take flight? I'm not sure if I have the hardtop hardware installed, but I'll check into it. I'm in the Bay Area, and have perhaps 40 miles to go and a bridge, unless I route south through San Jose. . Thanks and apologies if that works out to be a really unsafe and bad idea. Jay

POST 2Original post

It's about 75 pounds so if the front is fastened and the back still sticks up it should hold on as long as you don't go high speeds. Good luck!

Where is it exactly? You might be able to find another forumite with a cabrio to drive it home for you. Certainly worth a beer or two.

POST 4Original post

It probably won't fit in an A6 wagon flat, maybe on an angle? I know a GMT 800 Yukon has just enough room to fit a 996 hardtop flat. I'm guessing an A6 is a bit narrower than a Yukon.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the advice guys. @keytohwy: The top is in Menlo and I'm trying to get it back to Oakland, and that would most certainly be worth at least a couple brews.

POST 6Original post

it wont fit in your A6 check if your car has the hardware is easy. 996 all came with hardtop by default. look at your option list to see if there is an hardtop delete. you can also look at the rear post. there are caps that just pop out. if you need the special screw driver for the top, i have one and i am local. you can have it

POST 7Original post

Also there are 2 types of rear latch. The early one is bayonet,#2 below, ~1/2 turn to lock it down. The later one is screw type, #1 below, tighten to ~30 ft lb (check this not positive)

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all for the info. I found the TSB for the hard top for the old mounts as well as the new ones from 2005. I pried off the covers, and sure enough, I have the mounts in my '02. However, now I'm thinking of passing on it. Had a look at it this evening, and it didn't get a whole lot of love in their garage, so it has quite a few scratches on the roof, abrasions on the rear edge, and a couple of dings, but the glass looks good. I might suggest a lower price with the idea I'll paint it. I'll look around for body shops, but do any recommendations come to mind for a small job like just the hard top?

POST 10Original post

i would pass on it then. here in SF, the weather hardly need the hard top. the fabric top is nice enough to keep noise and element out. with a hard top, you will end up driving with the top up, defeats the purpose of the cab.

This is true, and good advice. I have a hard top that I got with mine. I think I've used it twice. Maybe if I build a hoist it will be used more often, but it isn't a daily driver, and with the highly predictable weather we have in the Bay Area, the need is probably minimal.

POST 12Original post

Really do not need a hardtop here in SoCal but I opted to buy one (could not pass up a great deal, cover and stand thrown in, immaculate shape). Like the option of going soft or hard....ya know
