Suggestion

4/32" of tread wear on two year old tires (age/heat cycles hardens rubber) and I'd certainly replace both.

Suggestion

I think you could reasonably and safely replace just that one tire if there is only a few 32ths difference in tread depth between the new tire and the origional tire and the origional tire is not very old.

Suggestion · Original poster

My question is whether I need to replace the other three, or if it's okay to have one new tire and the others with about 5,000 miles on them.

Suggestion

You might keep the good used tire and rotate all three when wear is about equal, but that would involve mounting and remounting tires.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

While I was out of town a member of my family decided to take my C4 out for a drive. One large pothole later, they were somewhat busted, and the car was awaiting a new tire . My question is whether I need to replace the other three, or if it's okay to have one new tire and the others with about 5,000 miles on them. Any adverse handling results? Thanks Mike 01 996C4

POST 2Original post

I would replace both tires on the same end (ie., two rears or two fronts). You might keep the good used tire and rotate all three when wear is about equal, but that would involve mounting and remounting tires.

POST 3Original post

The same thing happened to us on our Audi. We had to replace ALL FOUR tires, per the owners manual. The service manager informed us that otherwise the Quattro wouldn't function properly. I'm not sure if it's the same on the Porsche.

POST 4Original post

Just replace 2 and keep the old tire as a spare.

POST 5Original post

And now for a different point of view. I think you could reasonably and safely replace just that one tire if there is only a few 32ths difference in tread depth between the new tire and the origional tire and the origional tire is not very old. I know that's pretty vague, but these are both continua on which people vary on how much difference they'd be willing to accept. For example, I might replace just the one tire if I only had 2/32" of tread wear and the tires were only a year old. 4/32" of tread wear on two year old tires (age/heat cycles hardens rubber) and I'd certainly replace both.
