Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I would love to buy copy's of magazines which have articles on 2001 996's ( not turbos) Any direction on which magazines and date if publication ? Not interested in guides or books

POST 2Original post

Excellence would be your best bet but articles on 2001's will be rare. Lots of stuff for the 02 due to the changes for that year...

POST 3Original post

There are lots of articles online now. For example, do a search for "2001 911 [insert name of publications here]" and you will come up with some decent results. Just check the date and go to eBay to see if anyone is selling the issue. Good luck! -Eric

That a online HATER article about 996 , what's your point ?

POST 8Original post

Search the Euro mags such as EVO, Autocar, Car, as well as the Porsche specific mags. LOTS of articles out there, this was Porsche expansion in prime time.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 10478356

Probably not. Reviews are usually written for new or substantially revised cars. As such there probably are not many '01 articles, if any. To find reviews of the 996.1 you might search in 1998-99 when the model first appeared in the US, or perhaps even 1997 as it was released as a '98 model in Europe.

POST 10Original post

The best Exc-mag article was the one where all the IMSB, oil type, weight, myths were exposed. This article vindicated Jake and confirmed everything hes been telling us. Another opinion here: Entertaining but unfortunately partially true. And some wonder why the prices have crashed?

POST 11Original post

From the same article on TTAC (and I am a Jack Baruth fan of sorts...) Seems a clear cut indictment of the 996, until you look at the simple economics of supply and demand. In 1997, the last full year of 993 production, Porsche built about 15,000 911s (1998 numbers are hard to figure as they include both 993 and 996 models). In 1999, the first year of exclusive 996 production, Porsche built 28,000 911s - an 87% increase! When you add the 'cache' of the 993 being the last air-cooled Porsche, simply claiming that perceived quality explains the difference in current value is simplistic and misleading. It is a factor to be sure, but not the entire story, or even the core reason.

POST 12Original post

The "truth about cars" article is foolish. The author attacks the 996' engine and yet offers the following statement: "During those years, Porsche worked with its dealers to deny warranty claims, place blame on customers, withhold knowledge of fixes, and generally burn every last bit of goodwill they had built up over years of… um… previous engine failures in air-cooled cars." So, the author acknowledges that the pre-996 cars had engine failures but derides only the 996 for its engine issues despite Porsche carrying over the 996' engine architecture into the 997 (further despite writing the article 5 years into the 997's life). Huh? The author also seems to ignore that the 996 saved Porsche and outsold the car so coveted by its faithful that it almost bankrupted the company. The interiors of the 993 and earlier 911s were austere at best. I understand criticisms of the 996' interior but to say it was far worse than what preceded it is like ignoring the ills of previous 911s as though they were without fault. Is the 997 really holding its value much better than the 996, akin to a 993? The 993 was sold in somewhat limited numbers. It being (arguably) the best and last of its kind makes it iconic. With limited supply comes higher prices. The 996 and 997 were sold in larger volumes thus eroding some of the long term resale benefits from limited supply. The upside is that the increased sales kept Porsche in business. Prices of the 996 haven't crashed. Have they followed the same path as the 993? No. Why do people care? Buy or don't buy. I bought my car for me not for the next owner. -Eric

There was a review of all the '01 variants in Excellence. They may still have back copies available.

well stated and here's another point, Anybody do a cross country road trip in a 993 ? Drive 5,000 miles in a 996 and you don't need a chiropractor

POST 16Original post

The whole "Truth" article is rubbish. Take the complaint about "Frameless doors, complete commonality with the Boxster from the door latches forward, horrifying interior trim quality, drop-in assemblies provided by the lowest bidder, " Porsche had "Frameless doors" on every Cab and Targa! Were all those 911's cheap as well? Seen any modern Ferrari's with Framed Doors? And tell me why "commonality with the Boxster from the door latches forward" make for a Cheap car? It surely makes for more efficient production and then profit - but I remind everyone that the 986 and 996 cost less than a 968 or a comparable 993 new. And structurally the new series was a stiffer chassis with less weight and better performance. I hear the complaints about Headlights and Door handles and just see folks that like "OLD" design. And the "horrifying interior trim" in my all leather C4 is absolutely beautiful. Like 30 year old design? Great - enjoy your poor heat & A/C systems. I will take the very workable "drop-in assemblies provided by the lowest bidder" As long as they meet or exceed the design standards. P.S. Anyone seen any Internet surveys on the % of early Air Cooler motors blown up when the Chain tensioners let go??? Oh ... I forgot, we did not have an Internet forum back then where any one could state Opinions as "facts".

POST 17Original post

Wow, did he ever touch a nerve. Unfortunately many of the things he states are true or have some basis in truth. Except for the GT2, GT3, and TT, its pretty hard to sugar coat anything about the 996 without cringing and feeling like your defending some type of Yugo in the Porsche line. The 996 has some really nice lines but it is the definition of a "sheep in wolfs" clothing which has been pointed out by many highly regarded experts. The owners (us) of a 996 are usually the last to admit that we have all purchased a well hyped complete t#$% of the automotive industry. A t#$% of such magnitude that it requires a significant sum of $$$ to upgrade the engine to improve the car above "POS" status. Im not trying to be harsh but merely a realist. Can anyone name any model produced by any auto manufacturer that the value can plunge from a $30,000+ mint vehicle to a sub $8000 roller in 5 seconds flat? Not including an auto accident , of course. Yes, I also am kicking myself daily for not buying the TT or GT2. I have accepted the fact that my 996 will be placed into the catagory of "cool looking artifact" in my family auto collection. Now, if I can just decide which room to display it in.

POST 19Original post

Try to find a copy of the Brooklands Books "Porsche 911 1998 - 2004" and it will have the articles you are looking for. You unfortunately won't find any article specific to the 2001 Carreras as there was simply nothing new that year and the new Turbo got all the buzz. There are lots of articles on the 1999 C2 Coupes and Cabs, but take some with a grain of salt...particularly any of the Coupe articles that came out in 1997. For example, Car and Driver road test a Euro spec pre-production Coupe in 1997 without a sunroof, side impact door beams or even side airbags that weighed only 2900 lbs. When they tested a production US Coupe it weighted 3152 lbs. For the 2000 model year, the C4 and Euro GT3 came into being and hence got a lot of press. There are just a couple articles around about the early 3.6l, but a lot more on the later/heavier C4S. Most of the articles that were published will be in this one volume. It covers articles on pretty much every 996 model, including the GT2, 996.2 GT3 and even the GT3 RS.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
