BLAP, BLAP, BLAP, it would run for a few seconds and then it was back to the dixie cup fuel.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just did a quick pad change, went to bed the pads in ...and after applying the brakes a few times, I got enormous scraping from the front passenger wheel. Pulled the wheel off - rotor was hardly moving, as if the piston/pads hadn't retracted. Prised back pads with pliers, pulled away with no noise. Once I applied brakes, it happened again... Any ideas?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Never mind...I found the problem..not even going to admit to it!

POST 3Original post

Oh no you don't. You gotta come clean. We will be merciful.

POST 4Original post

I'm betting one of the pads was in backwards! If so this is the second such problem I have seen posted on a Porsche blog in the last couple of weeks.

It must be going around.

POST 12Original post

But they last much longer when you do it that way.

POST 13Original post

I bet it's in backwards too.. my brother did that to his 997. I don't know how you can put them in that way and not notice

POST 14Original post

Don't feel bad, Im sure I've done much worse getting in a hurry. I've learned to double check and sometimes triple check, or more, while doing technical jobs on my 996. I will even take photos or notes for reference. I took off one day and the ABS light and all kinds of flashing warnings came on, stopped, killed engine thinking I had just destroyed something, looked down and saw E-brake partially on. Felt like a complete idiot because wife was with me. So come on man, you gotta tell us now.

POST 15Original post

My father did the backwards pad last year. Drove it for a day.

POST 16Original post

Wow, putting the pads backwards just never occured to me as plausible to do, but the video clip definitely showed it's possible!

POST 18Original post

The amazing thing about the video is that they pad was in backwards long enough to wear through the damn disc! I would think that the noise would have been incredible.

MAYBE THE GUY IN THE VIDEO HAD A LOUD STEREO SYSTEM

POST 20Original post

I can assure you that I have NEVER done anything like that!

POST 21Original post

I happily completed changing out my rear brake pads yesterday and the same thing happened to me. Scraping. Yikes! I had just read this thread. So, I knew what it most likely was. Sure enough. I had one of the pads in backwards even after just reading about this. I thought I was being vigilant. My excuse is that I was thinking about a woman. **** happens. No damage done and all is well and my brakes are excellent.

POST 22Original post

I'll take it one step further. Several years ago I was at Texas World Speedway for a DE. Pitted next to me was a 70's vintage Indycar. It had a V8 of some kind with stacks and it was LOUD. The "crew" spent the better part of the day trying to get the thing to run. One guy had a dixie cup of fuel and he would pour it down the stacks, then another guy (wearing shorts, short sleeve shirt and HELMET) would approach the rear of the car with the external starter (looked like a VW engine wth a pinion sticking out he front). BLAP, BLAP, BLAP, it would run for a few seconds and then it was back to the dixie cup fuel. This went on for HOURS. Did I mention it was LOUD? Like Space Shuttle loud! Anyway, they finally got it running in the afternoon and out on the track. I was watching and it was SLOW, like REAL SLOW. Everyone was passing it. I saw it back in the pits later on. All the wheels were off and the "crew" was AWOL. Some guy was standing next to the car and I asked him what happened. He said they ran out of brakes. I took a peek at the calipers and rotors and he was partially right...it never had and pads in it to start with....LOL. There were a lot of curly aluminum shavings from the pistons where they made contact with the rotors. Lesson learned, even an Indycar isn't very fast without brake pads.
