Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

We did not see anyone with this problem over these two days, but the inspecotrs checked and double checked the oil filler cap for tightness.

I had just had the oil changed as part of my pre-event prep.

Now I check the cap as part of my normal track pre-tech.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just got back from Trackmasters at Watkins Glen. Had my first time on the track with a Porsche and my Porsche.(one and the same). Absolutly fantastic. I'll be a lot faster then the M-5 when I learn how to drive it better!
Did have a fire, however! Got the "meatball" after about 25 minutes. Going pretty good and was just getting ready to come in anyhow. Noticed a little smoke so I opened the rear lid after pulling into my space. Lots of smoke(white), some oil on the lip under the deck lid, and where the oil dripped down onto the hot exhaust...FIRE!!!!
Got out my new Halon type extinguisher (never thought I'd use it) and put it out. No damage at all. The fire wasn't very hot, and the halotron worked as advertised. It even cleaned off some of the oil. The rest was blotted up by paper towels and is now not even noticeable.
I thought I may have cross threaded the oil filler cap. I had just added some oil. I talked to one the the instructors I know later in the day. He has a C4. I told him about my adventure. He said at a recent all-Porsche event that he saw a lot of folks had put a hose clamp around the oil filler cap since the pressure build up is enough to cause oil to leak out!! Maybe this is what happened to me and it was not operator error (most common REAL cause of things going wrong, though most of us will refuse to admit it).
Has anyone else had this happen or used this method to prevent this problem?? I saw a C2 review on TV when I got back on Thursday night (Road and Track, or something like that). The car in the show had a yellow cap. Mine is black. Could Porsche have been aware and corrected this?
Thanks in advance for giving me "KNOWLEDGE".
I recently completed 2 full days of DE @ NHIS and the tech inspectors were quite aware of this happening. We did not see anyone with this problem over these two days, but the inspecotrs checked and double checked the oil filler cap for tightness. Good Luck.
I had the same problem at a DE at Road Atlanta last January. My oil cap came completely off and oil was all over the engine compartment. Fortunately the cap stayed in the engine compartment and I didn't have any fire, just lots of smoke. I had just had the oil changed as part of my pre-event prep. The guy at the shop that does all my work swears he put it on tight.
Now I check the cap as part of my normal track pre-tech. It has not come loose since and I have never had any oil leak out. But I keep checking anyway, just to be sure.
BTW, my 99 has a yellow oil filler cap, so they may have switched to black for later model years.
