Had a Simpson Voyager N, a full face, had to replace with LX N, an open face one.

MA is nomex (fire resistent lining in the SA), different snell testing for rollbar impact on an SA, and SA costs more.

Looking to buy a new helmet, primarily for DE.
Wondering for closed cockpit/coupe driving if people prefer open faced helmets vs closed face helmets.

Best are the full face helmets. The more protection, the better. However, I found out I get VERY uncomfortable in them, almost claustrophobic. Had a Simpson Voyager N, a full face, had to replace with LX N, an open face one. So, I guess I prefer the open face one since I suffocate in the closed face one
Just make sure they are Snell SA 2000 certified, not Snell M 2000.
My choice of helmets was based on feel. I did not consider an open face helmet. I went for the Bieffe full face, big money but great fit and feel. Good Luck.
Beteer protection with full closed helmet but definitely better open air ventilation with open helmets. Make sure its Snell 2000 rated or better and get the litest one possible. Regards. Mike
I would suggest the full face helmet. Even with an airbag, the potential for lower face injury exists in DE. As chief steward for Potomac PCA I have gotten to see first hand the results of some off track excursions. I have a Snell SA 2000 Bell for myself.
I have a Simpson Nomex open faced helmet. It is definitely more comfortable than the full faced helmet but may not be as safe. I really don't want to crash anyways.
I have an open face Bell Mag 4 open face--I went with open face because (a) it's hot, big time, here in Texas, and (b) easier to wear with glasses. While full face would be the "maximum protection choice" we might be going to extremes here. If we're talking motorbikes or Nascar racing, different story.
I'd be curious to know what track "incidences" anyone has seen where the difference in full vs. open face is an issue.
A good open face helmet protects the corners of your jaw and cheek bones--you'd really have to take a major shot on the chin, and I just don't see that happening in the course of a DE, especially in a car with airbags. If protection from airbags is the motivator for full face, what do you all do when driving on the street?
In any case, try on some helmets--I was at a DE not long ago, when a first timer got very claustrophobic in a full face helmet and had to borrow an open face one.

Definitely get a 2000 snell rated helmet.
I got a closed face because I tracked my targa Ferrari. I you have a cabrio get closed face; you'll never believe what can kick up in front of you even on a closed track. For a coupe, well, I'm still glad I have the closed face. God forbid.... worth it.
