What I do is put the element in the housing and then fill the housing with fresh oil and carefully screw it into the block.

Just add half a quart of oil and that should have the oil level nearly where it was before you replaced the filter.

But many many engines have their oiled change without this and do not suffer.

I changed my oil the other day but I could not get my filter housing off. None of my filter gadgets fit the filter well enough to loosen it. As I had to move the car I refilled with new oil. I have purchased the requisite porsche filter wrench, can i change just the filter with minimal oil loss?

Yes, but when you cranked it you just ran the new oil through the old filter and also mixed that old oil with the new. Just write it off and start over or change again SOON. If you messed up the filter housing, a new one is cheap if you want to replace it.

Yes. What I do is put the element in the housing and then fill the housing with fresh oil and carefully screw it into the block. I like to do this with my Boxster the thinking is this helps guard against "air" getting routed to the bearings. But many many engines have their oiled change without this and do not suffer. The techs I am told don't bother. And for my Turbo I can't do this because the housing goes in nearly upside down. Even if you do not pre-fill the housing all you need to do is top up the oil level. You do not even need to bother to check the level if you know it was ok to begin with. Just add half a quart of oil and that should have the oil level nearly where it was before you replaced the filter. Oh, I would not worry about the old oil/new oil "intermix". The amount old oil left in the housing to intermix with the new oil was not that much and should not affect the performance of the new oil. Remember there's roughly a liter or more of old oil in the engine unless perhaps you let the oil drain overnight. Even then there will be I would guess close to half a liter left even then. About the same amount that would have been in the filter housing.

Thanks that is what I thought. I will fill the housing prior to install. The oil will be changed again before the end if summer based in how many track days intend up instructing. Matt
