Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have run r-comps on my SC and driven to events with no problem.
Leading evidence: 'Run r-comps' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend brands etc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. If they are made in your size, I recommend Yokohama Advan AD08.

Why risk running over a nail on the way to the track and ruining your day.

Not such a big deal tearing up a tire at the track and using the spare to get home but even if that happens in the morning if you have another set of tires no matter what type your back in business.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I couldn't find a thread on this though one probably exists. I have a 2002 996 that will do maybe 3-4k miles per year. Hopefully, 5-10 DE and track days. All tires are a compromise, but my question is what would be a safe tire to learn on and also tolerate on the street. Current BFG's are very noisy. Thanks for the help!
No price range to consider? Do you want maximum performance or for them to last the entire season? For a safe tire to learn on where price is no object, try Michelin Pilot Sport 2. Very good overall performer and if you want even higher performance, you need to go DOT R comp tires. Do some comparisons on

Another vote for PS2s. I've been tracking my street car for a few years now with PS2s and have really enjoyed them. Pretty tough to get them out of shape, and they will tell you to back off way before something bad happens. Quiet enough on the street with good wet performance - on the street. On track I've found that even a few drops of rain will make them pretty useless. Of course, that can be fun as well. Just give yourself plenty of time to brake. Not much to compare to, except that I did one early track day with the stock Pirellis, and immediately made the change to PS2s.
My opinion is just that, an opinion, but here goes...
You said it, it's a compromise and if you are new to the track which I assume you are or you wouldn't be asking this question. IMO, start out on regular street tires until you get comfortable with the car, driving techniques (being smooth) before switching to DOT R/type track tires. The track tires are so much sticker that they can cover up mistakes and for sure raise the limit of the car substantially so you end up burning up expensive tires just learning how to drive on the track. I am not an advocate of driving to the track on the same tires you use on the track for a few reasons. One, you spend a lot of money for the track day, tough to schedule off with family, work etc... Why risk running over a nail on the way to the track and ruining your day. Not such a big deal tearing up a tire at the track and using the spare to get home but even if that happens in the morning if you have another set of tires no matter what type your back in business. Yes I know some events have tire trucks on standby ready to sell you a set of tires but you get my point.
I found the best setup is to buy a set of rims that someone is selling with used street tires, less tread the better, less tread squirm (obviously they have to passe inspection etc..). Use them up in a few DEs getting used to driving then put track tires on them and keep whatever street tires you like on your original rims.
I am not going to recommend brands etc... lots of threads on that with all kinds of opinions
HTH,
Dan
While an extra set of wheels is great but they will require a way to get them to the track. Roof rack? Small trailer? Friend? It is a slippery slope for trackdays. Why not just trailer the car to the event?
I have run r-comps on my SC and driven to events with no problem.
It is all about how much risk you are willing to accept.
All that being said, I agree that r-comps are not good to learn to drive with. Learn using less sticky tires, get comfortable with your cars handling and learn to drive the line. Once you are proficient you can then upgrade to r-comps.
PS2's will cook if you have much track experience - they are not made to be a combined track/street tire.
I vote for Hankook RS-3 or Kumho Ectsa XS. They are much cheaper than PS2's, have more dry grip, and work great as a daily driven tire. The PS2 only beats them in wet traction.
Do not get R-comps until you know how to drive pretty well. The stick like glue but will breakaway quickly so you need to have the skill to catch it when it happens.
If they are made in your size, I recommend Yokohama Advan AD08. My situation is close to yours but with a few more miles per year. They have surpassed my expectation on the track. They talk just enough and are quite sticky. The tread on mine doesn't seem to be wearing as much as I thought it would. Cheaper than PS2s when I was shopping last year. Mine came in at under $1200 for a wide body set. Just a great tire IMO.
Get BFG Rivals- it's a brand new tire; blows every other street tire away on the track. They're forgiving at very high slip angles, too, and have decent grip on cool mornings right out of the garage. Should work great for you as a dual-purpose tire if performance is your goal.
