You can't get something for nothing.Look at the sustantial changes Porsche made in MY02-this gave the 996 about 25 more horsepower with improved low end grunt. The factory power kit is costly but there is ALOT to it,and even then you'll only get about 20 hp.Just changing the chip isn't going to do it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I own a 1999 C4 (bought in the US and shipped to Europe) and I am looking to upgrade the engine for more performance. I recently came across an article in the Business 2.0 (see below) that described an interesting alternative to a Porsche Powerkit that I have been looking at over the past month but is way too expensive : roughly 10K USD for 30 or so extra factory-approved-hp installed at the local porsche dealer. It seems that the product mentioned in the article is relatively inexpensive and I assume easy-to-install alternative. When browsing the web I was not able to find the APR upgrade, but with some help did bump into GIAC DME chips (for example on the AWE site) that promise +23 hp for the 1999 996 for USD 995. Now my questions, which I hope you will able to help me with : - is the GIAC upgrade the way to go or are there better alternatives !? - does anyone of you have experience with this type of upgrade ? And if so, what are the pro's and con's / do's and dont's ? - Is it easy to install ? Can I do it myself ? - Will it affect warrenty / dealer willingness to service the car ? ========== From the Business 2.0 : 650 Bucks for 50 Extra Horsepower? Hell, Sign Me Up! Performance-obsessed car owners now have a way of coaxing extra juice out of their engines without leaving their PCs. APR, an aftermarket auto-parts maker in Alabama, sells a customizable flash memory chip to replace a car's factory-installed chip -- which controls fuel injection, engine timing, and other functions. It lets drivers switch between the car's factory settings and a high-performance program that adds an extra 50 horsepower. Additional settings, which drivers install through their PCs, include a "racing" option that squeezes yet another 25 hp from the engine (but requires 100-octane gas) and -- for the security-obsessed -- a "valet" setting that locks in a 40-mph speed limit when parking-lot attendants have the keys. The company makes the $650 chips for Audis, Volkswagens, Porsches, and two other VW-owned brands (Seat and Skoda). -- Ian Mount

POST 3Original post

APR stands for Audi Performance and Racing, they specialize in Audi and VW. I do however believe they have done a chip for a TT. They do chips for turbo cars which will yield much more than a NA car. There is no way in hell you can get 50 hp on a NA car from just a chip. I would say 5 to 10 maybe probably less on a Porsche. The TT is a different story, since it is a turbo motor they can increase the boost and fuel and get substantial gains. I personally atleast for Audi and not a huge fan of the GIAC chip but that is a personal opinion. Garret the person who makes the chips has done multiple chips for Porsche 959 to attempt to make the legal or to get more Hp I am not sure which. If you want to do a chip I have heard very good things about the TRG unichip from the racer's group. It is not soldered onto the board like others so you can remove it and also tune it to different modifications you plan on in the future. I do not think APR has a chip for your car, actually I am almost positive. But do not expect more than 10 hp from a chip on a NA car, and even that is being generous.
