Hi everyone, its Mav again.
Anyone order his/her porsche using Porsche's tourist delivery program? How does that work? How much does that cost? Can you drive your porsche on the Autobahn before the car ship to US?
I picked up my car in '99 on the tourist delivery program. Cost at the time was an additional $2200 which included two weeks of insurance and fees to drive the car in Europe, shipment home, import duty etc. If your trip will last longer than two weeks you can buy additional insurance by the day, if necessary. I also got a break on a first class hotel stay in Stuttgart, transportation to the factory, and a tour and lunch at the factory. All arrangements were made through my dealer. The pics below are of the factory museum and my car being introduced to me in the factory showroom.
This is an absolutely terrific way to get your new Porsche, and you will have the opportunity to drive it on it's "home turf" on the Autobahn at speeds that it was designed for. It is well worth the additional cost, IMHO.
Currently the cost is $2250.00 plus your airfare and hotel. There is also a $10,000. VAT tax(Value Added Tax) which is refunded to you. I suggest everyone who custom orders a Porsche to do this, it is great.
I took tourist delivery of a BMW330xi (everyday driver) - great way to go IMHO as Europe's roads are great. Same sort of program, includes insurance etc.
However - if you take tourist delivery of a BMW, then the car actually costs LESS, by several thousand dollars, depending upon the model - some sort of tax break is my understanding - and BMW is good enough to pass on the saving. I'd always admired Porsche's willingness to gouge the customer one extra time ;-) presumably they pocket the tax difference AND the $2,200.
No flames please, if you have the $$$, you'll enjoy the experience, but boy, Porsche have no shame ..........
chris
i strongly agree with you! european delivery is a rip off!
for the same money you can drive a porsche through the porsche travel club on the pag website and get a few nice hotels thrown into the deal
i know its not the same as having your own car but the upside is that someone else (pag) is risking their car on unfamiliar roads not you
i might feel differently if pag offered the same deal as bmw but as it stands i think this is a no brainer--unless money is truly no object

I agree it is a rip-off, relative to the other marques. My uinderstanding, though, is that the car price difference is pocketed by the dealer who made the arrangements, while the $2200 goes to PAG for the tour. Just wanted to make sure we get mad at the right people.
