Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Palting mentioned checking tire pressure regularly and what I wanted to know is what's a good tire pressure guage?

I will replace both rears with Pirellis, or maybe stick with Conti.

Suggestion
Either frequent use of tire gauge or aftermarket pressure sensor seems to be needed for these tires.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In case anyone is considering tires.....
was doing a good pace (let's just say that I was going at a healthy speed) on the 280 (bay area) when I felt the back vibrate.....pulled off the freeway into a gas station
Had several rips in the tire - which might have blown at speed and I might have died....
Just ordered another pair of Pzero Azimmetricos 18s for the back. I'm sold
996 blue, I am not familiar with any special technology with the PZA's regarding blow outs. Do you think it was a combination of good luck and a high quality tire, or did the PZA's come through in another sort of way.
Either which one, I'm glad that you made it to rest safely.
Regards.
....never lost control and the flat tire drove well without damaging the rim....at that speed the tire must have been good....also the hole is pretty big.
....and some good luck

how many miles did you have on your assyms? do you know the cause of the rips in the sidewall?
glad you're ok
i feel even luckier now to have gotten the assyms as original equipment. i have 9300 mi with at least 1/3 tread in back and 1/2 tread in front. performance is impeccable in the dry and very good even in rain.
about 10K miles. Don't expect the tires to last more that 15-20K.....oh well.
will find out what caused the rip later this week. Driving on the "bicycle spare tire" at 50 on the freeway is scary. Now I know what its like to drive one of those cars in the slow lane (no feeling of control and everyone passes you)
Originals treads were Continentals (not the new model) which were awful and felt like the car was floating.
glad to hear they held up so well - i am off shortly on a 5,000 kilometer trip for my summer holiday -majority of the long drives tend to be autoroute which normally ends up 6-7 hrs straight at 170km/ph with cruise control on.

Found several posts on the topic. Apparently, with the low profile tires and stiff sidewalls, a visual inspection will not warn you that the tire pressures are low. With the tires warm, it becomes even less obvious. Excessive heat then builds up on long high speed runs, and blow out ensues. Either frequent use of tire gauge or aftermarket pressure sensor seems to be needed for these tires.
Glad to see you were allright, though. More importantly, that the wheels were OK
Glad to see you made out ok. I had a similar experience with my right front Conti exploding over the 4th of July weekend. I ended up ordering 4 P-zeros and I've been very pleased. More road noise than the Conti's but a more responsive tire.
Palting mentioned checking tire pressure regularly and what I wanted to know is what's a good tire pressure guage? I checked my tire pressure on my new P-zeros. I have 3 of those pop-up ones and all 3 gave different readings. The high and low ones varied by 8 psi! If there's a good accurate one please let me know! Thanks.

I admit I also have several of the pop-up ones. They all seem to read same pressures, though.
Consumer reports rated the tire gauges May 2002. Accutire digital (MS 4000 and MS420B) were rated best performers. Best buy to me was the NAPA pencil (a pop-up), almost same rating as the digital.
Same thing happened to me last nigh on the right coast.
I was driving from Boston to NY last night and my rear Conti with 12K smocked. It was raining and ended up driving with stinky spare for 200 miles @55.
Not much fun. I will replace both rears with Pirellis, or maybe stick with Conti.
