Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last friday my 99 996 6sp suffered a transmission failure. After expressing my displeasure with the ever increasing list of warranty repairs my car has experienced in the last year with Porsche Customer Commitment I was promised fast action. Surprisingly, my dealer had the car ready on Tuesday morning 1030am.Installed was a new(not reman) transmission, clutch slave and throwout bearing. The car had been carefully washed and ready when I arrived. My factory warranty expires in November and I have just purchased an extended warranty. 13500 miles and the following problems. Two oil leaks, rear main seal replacement, coolant recovery tank replacement, center console lid repaired, new transmission and the latest emissions recall complete. The service department at Paul Miller Porsche in Parsippany, New Jersey is without a doubt-phenomenal! My advice--Don't even think about owning one of these cars without some sort of warranty coverage!

POST 2Original post

yep. that's why I'm writing Porsche to demand an extra 2 year warranty on mine.... Glad to hear yours got fixed!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm supposed to get followed up by Customer Committment on Friday this week.I would seriously doubt they would extend your warranty by two months let alone 2 years. With the small scale production, compared to other manufacturers I would at least hope they would take care of the common problems and treat them like a "recall". At this point I had to bite the bullet and buy extended coverage.I'm fortunate that the service at my dealer is exemplary and its only 10 minutes away.I've been told other high dollar cars have their share of problems too--It still doesn't make you feel any better though. My dealer recently delivered a MY02 996 cab/tip-within a week it suffered a catastrophic engine failure-ouch.Sooner or later if you buy enough cars you'll get a problematic one regardless of brand, its just the nature of things mechanical. And I guess its my turn in the barrel.

POST 4Original post

I'm afraid that with a small volume manufacturer such as Porsche, some problems may be cheaper to " fix" by continued warranty repacement than to redesign the whole part. Consider the rear main seal leakage that has plagued them from '99 through even the current '02s. They updated the seal design in 6/00 production but I had read elsewhere that nothing short of a redesign of the engine/tranny mating area will cure it- probably saved for the next gen 997 , right ?
