Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone owned a porsche 968 before going for a 996? Any big differences in comfort, handling and acceleration? Thanks David (thinking of changing my 968 for a 996)

POST 3Original post

Nice looking car but compared stock to stock it's underpowered because it's a 4 banger(big one though at 3.0 liters. The hand brake is on the left driver side which is odd and because its a four banger at highway cruising at top gear runs high on the rpm range. But if modified(force-induced) it can blow really well. Regards. Mike

POST 4Original post

Hey Fokker: I owned a 1994 968, black on black, 6 sp., prior to purchasing a 2002 996 in November '01, with a 1995 m3, sandwiched between the two. I have steadily increased in the performance, and handling-inetersting transition, I think. The 968, was a great handling car, very forgiving with 50/50 weight distribution, and a powerful enough engine to get mov'in enough to get the adrenilin up, but not enough to break the rear end out, unless in a turn at high RPM's. The 968 almost felt lik a turbo to me, since you needed, 4k plus RPM's to get pushed into the seat hard, a little lag there. I have said that I screwed up getting rid of it, since it would make and awesome club race car, IMHO. Just needs to be lightened a bit, and lowered. Great because of performance, reliability, stability; all in a recent Porsche worth $15-20,000-not bad. The 996 is a diffrent animal. The M3 was probably a good transition car, since it bridged the performance gap b/w the 968 and the 996. My 996 does not have PSM, so especially with the engine behind you, they can get a little "loose" I would tread lightly for awhile to get used to it. It will come around on you, if you don't stay on top of it. They say the 911's are better about that now than before, but still, there is a good bit more weight behind you and the laws of physics still prevail. Overall, the 996 is fantastic, but for the cost of a new 996, you could buy 5 968's. Good luck and I'll be glad to answer any comparision questions regadring any of these 3 cars. Cheers, DW in SC <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the answer!!!!! I still wonder about the high way comfort betwinn the to cars. Wich of the cars has the highest noise level in the cabin during cruise? Thanks David

POST 6Original post

Definitely the 968. At highway cruising speeds tachs at around 5,000 rpm because it's a four cyl(large one though). I would only get one for the track not as a daily cruiser-good car to mod. Regards. Mike

POST 7Original post

I doubt the 5k rpm thing, the car has a 6 speed and 80mph should be at or under 3K, no more than that. It's a great car but I can't compare it to a 996. who cares about quiet highway cruising, that's what 7series are for! jason

How could a car top out at ~150-155 when its at 5000rpm at 80mph?
