Some people have told me that changing your air filter is a bad idea due to oils on the aftermarket filters. The oils in turn will set off your check engine light. Has anyone had or heard anything like this here? I believe I heard it about the K&N, not so much the BMC filters.

I have heard it about the BMC filters. I also heard that K&N quite making the filter for the 996 for just that reason. Something to do with the oil in the filter messing up the MAF sensor. I have also heard that many people have swapped filters with no ill effects. I guess it just depends on how dry the filter is.

I have a BMC and it is fine. Just don't over oil the filter when you clean and renew it. Wrap it in paper towels overnight to absorb any excess oil. Then re-install it. Probably safe to do the same with a new filter. Loren (99 996)
