Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been "eyeing" the airintakes for the water-cooled 996, specifically the C4S. To my surprise, the delicate radiators - behind the bumper portholes - have not screens, to protect them from road debris which could cause overheating and/or a puncture of the cooling system. It seems to me an obvious engineering/design flaw. However, I am not C4S owner yet. Are the non-screened and exposed radiators a non-issue? Would appreciate your experience. tnx

POST 2Original post

You're more likely looking at the A/C condensor, the radiator is behind it. Condensor is important to protect, but NOT as important as the radiator.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I noticed that both the right and the left fender portholes have exposed and unprotected "finned" metal elements behind them. Are there two sets of condensors with radiators behind each porthole?

POST 4Original post

Yes, I think so, but not absolutely certain about both sides.

POST 5Original post

You can buy mesh inserts. I had them on my Boxster a few years ago. There was a heated debate if it actually prevented airflow from getting in and causing the car to run hotter. I ran them for 3 years and everything was fine. I painted them to match the color of the car. All you need is one rock or something and you are in for a lot of $$$. I just converted my 996 to RUF and the new RUF nose includes inserts in the intakes to protect them. Check out this pix...
