Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Change the clutch right away when it begins to slip.
Leading evidence: 'Replace clutch right away' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace clutch right away' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It obviously affects performance slightly more & more over a period of time to the point you dont notice it until you get it fixed.
I took my 99 996 to get the oil changed at a dealer and the mechanic performed an inspection...he told me that my pressure plate and flywheel were bad..and also that the car had an oil leak..the car has 22k miles and is a July 99 build date...my question is...is this a common problem..has anyone else had similar problems...will oil leaks become more of a problem as our 996s get older...I thought that the later build dates did not have these oil leak problems...thanks everyone...
Yes. There are at least 3 TSB's for oil leaks. Sounds like you got the worst one. If you do not catch the main seal leak soon enough it will eventually leak bad enough to fling oil all over the clutch and then the oily clutch will heat damage the flywheel.
My leaked at 10,000 miles but I caught it right away and so my clutch and flywheel were okay. I also made the dealer perform the fixes for the other leaks before they happened. My 99 is a May build and the dealer did this under warranty... your's should too.
Once these are fixed with the new seals the rarely leak again. Also, be careful that you don't overfill the oil level... this can add pressure and cause seals to leak too.
Good Luck!
Loren (99 996)
Agree 100% with Loren. Nov. '98 build. Had main rear seal leak at 6K, fixed under warranty and rock solid to 47K now. If oil leak is determining factor in clutch and flywheel damage, all should be taken care of under warranty. Hope that's the case. My clutch wore out at 39K. Dealer said that was within the norm! Good Luck.
My clutch also went at 32,000 996 c2 98 and dealer said to expect anything from 20K if tracking the car up to 50K and any where in between if not. 38K sounds about right if you drive the car as it should be driven - FAST
This post is right up my alley..... Check out the "How much does a Clutch cost" post a few weeks ago. Mine went at 24k. Some words of advice....
Change the clutch right away when it begins to slip. If you don't, you could heat up the flywheel (Like I did) and ruin it.... costing you another $850.

Yeh - although I look after my clutch never riding or sliding it still has to take some stick. It takes some doing to engineer something that can handle 300bhp in 2nd gear flat out and then change up at 7000/8000rpm. Just ask any Ferrari owner. I believe these guys can go through a clutch within 8K miles !!! One consilation, when you get it done boy will you see a differance - its like driving a different car. It obviously affects performance slightly more & more over a period of time to the point you dont notice it until you get it fixed. At least I now know I have at least another 20K clutch free miiles to go !!
