Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'throwback' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'throwback' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Use aisin-warner (japanese made) transmission' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone verify that the 996 is built by AUDI and not PORSCHE? A very reliable source, who I will not mention informed me that this is the situation. I know that technology and engineering is shared between Porsche, VW and Audi, I'm just a little disturbed that such an integral part would be built by Audi. Audi makes great cars, however, I bought a 996 not a Audi!

Neither makes the tranny for the other. Tiptronic is nothing more than an automatic transmission with electronic software to allow the manual shifting. This transmission is made by ZF Friedrichshafen AG for both Audi and Porsche. The Tiptronic gearbox in the 996 Turbo is made by Mercedes-Benz.

I thought Ford owned Volvo, no?

Sure but, we are talking about the automatic.
Yup, Ford owns Volvo. But the auto in the newly designed lines (1999 on)is A GM unit. Like I said, go figure. Probably a throwback from pre-Ford ownership.

It is my understanding that BMW switched to ZF sometime in 2001 for their 6-cylinder cars. The V8's always had a ZF unit. The former GM auto gearbox is now finding home inside the new Cadillac CTS.
Ford does own Volvo. The S80 uses a GM 4T65 transmission. It's the only transmission that would fit behind an inline six mounted transversely. Yes, this car was developed before the Ford onwership. The S60/V70 use an Aisin-Warner (japanese made) transmission. BMW uses both the GM 5spd and ZF 5HP19 in their 3 series.
