It was dusk and I was on the way to a track event the next day and just had the MAF sensor replaced after waiting two months for the part.

Anyway, that left a 2.5 mile stretch of unbroken highway between a town and the hastily made exit that is rarely used but is well maintained by the federal government.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There is 4 lane highway that got stopped dead in it's tracks because it threatened to run through the habitat of some kind of near-extinct insect. They created an exit to the nearest main road, then another entrance/exit beyond this habitat to continue the highway. Isn't that incredible?
Anyway, that left a 2.5 mile stretch of unbroken highway between a town and the hastily made exit that is rarely used but is well maintained by the federal government. Took the P-car there yesterday and today. Did one run under the limit to make sure there were no cops, danger spots and dead cows. Came back, hit 160 mph, cool as a cubercum...err, cucumber. Not yet quite used to the idea that you can go that fast. More mental than anything else, since the car was composed and steady. Went back today, and did 170 mph. Redlined through the first 4 gears, chickened out a bit on 5th before going 6th. These cars are awesome. This car performs way beyond my capabilities. Need to get a couple of DE's under my belt.
Another thing. I think i blew the snot out of the stock exhaust. There is definitely more rumble at 3k rpm, and a more throaty (can't think of another term)idle as well as a meaner snarl at acceleration. Checked to make sure I didn't blow a hole or something, but there is no telltale hiss or metallic sound. The stock exhaust sound definitely matures.
What an awesome experience that must have been! That off ramp must have come up awfully fast at that speed! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
I didn't time it. Probably 30 secs or less. Seemed like a blink of an eye, really. I was paying attention to the tach, since I didn't want to hit the limiter. Only when I was on 6th gear did I check the digital readout. I'm still grinning ear to ear. One of these runs I'll take somebody with me to take a pic of the instruments, then I'll post it.
As far as the off ramp, 2.5 miles seemed pretty long. I think I got up to speed within the first mile. I got in a couple of "Yahooo"s in there before I had to slow down. I think one of those prcious insects got splattered on the windshield. Big mother splat. Still grinning.
Big speeds are definetly fun, but I'm not sure if the risk to reward ratio is worth the thrill. Being a NJ resident I'm plagued with high insurance and Sheriff's who think that they're "Boss Hog". I'm faced with the daily temptaions of smooth and twisty roads. Speed is definetly a drug which I crave! My biggest speeding ticket was at 90mph five years ago in a C280. Since then I've learned my lesson, if you're caught doing 90 or better don't wait for that Crown Victoria to come out. Every now and then there will be an ambitious trooper or sheriff who feels the need to get an adrenaline rush by chasing a Porsche, only to have a dissapointing story to tell to his fellow officers. It's kind of like "the fish that got away"... I know that this type of behavior is not good, the Porsche just Brings out the Devil in me! 170 MPH on the street.........youre a Bona Fide Cowboy! That takes ***** even after you did recon......to make sure its safe and clear.
I wish I had some highway to try the same thing ....but all we have is Pocono Long IMSA course and Ill see 160 before braking.....unless I blow off the turn in and straightline the bowl.
FYI....there is absolutely no packing in any 996 stock OEM mufflers........so they stay the same loudness no matter how hard or long you run them......even 7000rpm at 100degress F for 24hours wouldnt make them any louder...perhaps the engine just gets meaner in tone when you drive it very hard..its learns new settings.
JimBob
You need to tell that feller to buy a Ruf! Would you believe my mufflers have more than 100 runs at 200+? All legal of course since I race with the MKM group. Go to openroadracing.com for information! No sheriff to watch for and 108 miles of public highway to go fast without worry or limit!

JimBob, you're something else, bubba. Took me longer to read your post that to run that 2.5 mile.
Sorry about them thar insectics. I don't thinnk it was the last one. I swear there was a swarm following me home.
I don't think it's louder, 993RS. There is a change in tone and timbre. More snarly, for lack of a better term. It could certainly be due to the difference in the engine management after it learns the driver drives hard. I'll head on to my dealer later this week, and see if he can run one of his showroom cars for comparison.
Open road racing sounds great, Roland. Nevada's a bit far for me, though. And I'm not so sure I want to do racing. DE's I think are the most I'll do. I've heard it can be addicting, and can become progressive. I'll let you kmow when I'm ready for a tow car and trailer. I'm still grinning.
Joe, you got 476 Northeast Extention by you. That is where I was able to get my car up to about 170. There is one section don't remember if before or after Landsdale that is just straight for about 3 miles. Go for it. But if you get caught, don't blame me.
John
Just a comment about speed being a mental limit. I have taken 3 different Porsches to 155mph all on the same highway with plenty of space and no cars. At 155, my brain tells me to slow down. All 3 cars had a lot more to go. I think I would be able to extend the limit in 5 mile increments, but to just go out there and rip off 170 the first time out, I couldnt do that. Be safe all, we look forward to everyones imput here, we dont wanna lose anyone. Good Luck.
You gotta love southern Europe! There not that much speed limit law enforcement. There is a highway I take once/week that connects Spain and Portugal. There is a two lane straight with a small decline just long enough to allow me to hit 176mph(289Kmh) before slamming on the brakes for the curve. I can do this every once in a while when there is no other cars on the straigh. The car behaves very nobly. Maybe I can take an Mpeg of it, just gotta figuare out how to hold the camera since I wouldnt bring anyone with me.
Anyway I had an M3 which was factory limited to 250kmh(actual 263kmh) and when I hit on the breaks on the same straigh, the brakes would fade and tremble for a while. That doesnt happen with the 996.

170 + angry state trooper = jail time + suspended license + angry wife + real high insurance
But, hey got to live once. Good job but becareful.
But, if you do get pulled them the trooper that your Foot got stuck and you were possesed.
Most of my time, 1000 miles, on the autobahn last summer was at 100 to 130MPH+ and most of what was passing me was motorcycles.
Over 130 my wife tended to get VERY nervous.
Absolutely stable at those speeds, unbelieveably car.
Last month I had the opportunity to open up my 01 C4 on a 6-lane highway and it was awesome. It was dusk and I was on the way to a track event the next day and just had the MAF sensor replaced after waiting two months for the part. As I was told, when there is a problem and the Check Engine light goes on, the engine management system goes it the protection mode. So this was the first time my car was running at its best with my new Porsche Sport Exhaust installed.
My exhaust system is not wired to the Speedo as it was intended; I have a switch in the center console that allows me to have the exhaust always open or always closed. The car was running and sounding great and I was in an area of the freeway that was clear ahead and behind me, so I opened it up and the car was roaring at 140 and wanted more. I could not believe how solid to the road the car was with no resistance; it just laid down and roared. I know the car had a lot more to go; however 140 was my limit. What a great feeling. I'm pretty sure I will not take it to 170, but I will crank it up a couple of notches. I'm looking forward to a openroad event soon.
I have been on the autobahn many times in the last couple of years, but only with a MB S420 or similar cars. Certainly a thrill. Maybe a Euro delivery of my next Porsche.
About the jail time, been there, done that, in 1971 with a 914 in Miami along with a 356 one night. Way before radar, they called it VASCAR and the Florida Highway Patrol waited until we were at the end of I-95 going towards Coconut Grove with cars waiting for us. Turn off you engines and step to the curb. We tried to explain that Porsche was the safest car on the road at high speeds, but he did not buy it. Go to jail and $500.00 bail for willful and wanton reckless driving (over 90). All the other driver and I could do is talk about the great run on the way to jail. The FHP even had some fun running with us until he had the trap set.
Well 31 years later and I still enjoy opening up my Porsche on the highway once and a while.
Palting,
good on ya! Temptation is way too great to stretch the old girls lungs. Must say you are truly brave though. I went up to 160MPH and lost my nerves - admittedly the car was rock steady.
I think car would easily pull the claimed 170+ MPH if I had kept the right foot planted. Looking to 'beat' my own record later.
For all speed conscious P drivers, my run was done at 2am on the Motorway with no other cars on the road - irresponsible, I know, but at least others were not at risk.
