Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 2Original post

This was a commonly reported problem on early MY '99 996s, caused by failure to close the gas tank cap fully following a visit to the gas tank. If this is the problem, it will take a visit to the dealer to get the light off and make sure you turn the gas cap past several "clicks" when closing the cap after a fill up. Most dealers are familiar with the problem - and they may be a "fix" - I just don't recall (never had the problem on my late MY '99).

POST 3Original post

Actually, your dealer should know if the TSB for a new o-ring on the gas cap was done on your car. Porsche keeps this info in a database that all dealers have access to. They should have replaced the o-ring and put some lubricant on it to seal properly. A quick and dirty way to turn the light off is to disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes. If the problem is still there the light will come back on. (You will need to reset clock, radio stations should be ok, but you will need to reenter the radio security code). Loren (99 996)

POST 4Original post

No need to take it to the dealer, just pull the battery cable..... only if you are SURE it was a loose gas cap. My dealer has loosened it TWICE on me when I've brought it in for other service. If you do not want to pull the batter cable, just wait a few days, it should turn off by itself.
