Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Mine had to be replaced about the same mileage as this car.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My buddy is thinking about buying a 1999 996 cab (silver and black) with 37K miles for $62K. It has been returned lease to the dealer, and appears to be very clean. The only mods appear to be 18's. Anything he needs to know? Thanks in advance for your comments.
It all depends on how soon your friend wants the car. With more time and research you'll probably end up witha better buy then 62,000. Also with what's said about 99 models pre-99 had a few problems but most if not all should be fixed under warranty. I probably would look for a newer model say 2000 or 2001 with a longer warranty unless the one you looked at had extended one or offered with extended. But with 1999 I wouldn't hesitate to buy one either since majority of the problems were not too huge cept from what I heard with tranny problems which didn't happen to me. Good Luck. Mike
'99 cabs can be had all day long for $55k-$57k with less milage than that. Unless they are REALLY willing to discount, I say pass <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
Tmolbey,
If your buddy really wants and likes the car then why dont he show an offer to the guy instead. If the dealer says NO then no biggie. But, from my experience. They want to unload and sell so I would look around.
Good luck
Price seems high for a cab with so few options. Mileage is ok for a SoCal car. Based on what I know my '99 C2 Coupe is worth on both trade and private sale, I think the dealer is high by AT LEAST $5K, maybe $8K.
Regarding things to look out for in a '99, well...
rear main seal - has it been replaced.
coolant reservoir - TSB on this one - replace it.
gas cap - another TSB - replace it.
air bag warning lights - have both seats been fixed.
ignition switch - does the key turning feel at all loose. Mine had to be replaced about the same mileage as this car.
Clutch - will wear out anywhere from 40-60K. You didn't say whether this was a 6 speed or a tip.
These are the biggies, I've had other small problems as well.
Good luck!
Thank Brent (and the others). The car is a 6 sp. Any feelings from the group on purchasing an extended warranty - is it of any value if all of the items that Brent mentioned have been addressed?
That price is way high at least by East Coast standards. Last Oct. I had to sell my '99 cab that was a daily driver with 55k mi. (because I was getting an '02) and the dealer's wholesalers were offering only $40k. I wound up selling it privately for $45k. For your information, the person I sold it to now has to sell it himself because he need college tuition money for his son. e-mail me and I can put you in touch with him if you want. The car (red w/savannah beige) was meticulously maintained and never had any problems
