it has been proven to be a sound solution for many of us who do not like the boat row throws of the stock 996 shifter.
Leading evidence: 'sound solution' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'sound solution' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install mere $900' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Seriously, read what you typed cuz I think you're confusing your own damn self cuz now the sharkwerks post says it's recommended for any 997/Cayman not the 996.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The 997 shifter is reinforced with a metal plate and has some upgraded bearings (a great - no fantastic, improvement over the 996) but still not as precise as the Sport shifter.
Porsche SPORT Shifter Part no. 000 044 700 26
There has been a lot of confusion over the Porsche Sport Shifter and the Porsche short shift modification - they are two different animals. The above shifter changes the fulcrum point of the lever. In the center of the blue part of the shifter you can see that the bearing has been moved to above the frame of the shifter. The 996 shifter is flimsy and is reinforced only with plastic. The 996 shifter has the fulcrum below the top of the frame (the black plastic).

Here is the Porsche link to the Porsche description: (called the short shifter here to confuse everyone)
http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessori...formance/n163/
The advertised price is $595 - pretty steep for what appears to be just a plastic piece that moves the fulcrum of the shifter up about 1/2 inch - but the mechanism is magic. The 997 shifter has most of the improvements that the Sport shifter does and is only $160!

I love German vocabulary. Schaltwegeverkurzung = shiftthrowshortening. Don't forget that it provides a more "active and sporty driving experience". I don't know what the current miserable exchange rate is, but I wonder what a Porsche short shift kit, including installation would cost here in the states.
Stefan
why bother with all that bs when u can get a great aftermarket ssk for much less? it's not like that part is covered by your original warranty or anything.
i have the B&M and it's great.
do you know how to read English?
the "cheap shifter" i have on is the B&M which is identical to the OEM SSK kit. it has been proven to be a sound solution for many of us who do not like the boat row throws of the stock 996 shifter. if you wanna go ahead and compare who's gone on the cheap with our 911s, let's make it what you want it to be - a d1ck measuring contest.
if u want to actually better explain why someone should spend $595 for a part that's designed for what u say is the 997 (the website u point us to lists the part under Tequipment 996, and the porsche website refers to it as a
short shifter
FYI) and for what you imply as being "magic" and "a great - no fantastic, improvement over the 996" then tell us why... in ENGLISH.
Ben - Your buttons are so easy to push! Everyone knows you wheel sensitive.
In case you missed it - your chain was being pulled!
I did not pay the $600 for the shifter and there is no way that I would pay that amount for a street car. If there were points on the line, or money I could see it. I received mine from a Porsche test driver for $200 (approx).

The Short shift modification results in a much greater effort than stock when shifting that some feel unacceptable. The notchy feel is also difficult for some. The 997 shifter goes a long way in improvement over the 996. Solid and smooth - not like a shovel in a bucket of mud that the 996 feels like. The sport shifter moves the pivot point of the shifter up in the frame, keeping the optimal shifter height, while maintaining the full length of the shifter lever. The result is a great reduction in lever travel, a fair amount of increased effort, and greatly increased precision gear selection feel.
My recommendation is that if you can find it cheep, grab it!
I got mine, you got yours?
Again, your post is hella confusing. The part you say is the 997 part is not a 997 part according to the link you posted up in your first post.
It's clearly a 996 SSK to which I think it's actually the "cheap" B&M ssk that I have on my car along with MANY other 996 owners here in this forum.
Seriously, read what you typed cuz I think you're confusing your own damn self cuz now the sharkwerks post says it's recommended for any 997/Cayman not the 996. And in the thread you call it a sport shift not short shift kit when in fact the Porsche link clearly calls it a SHORT SHIFTER.
You need a button that says "translate from English to German", that's the one you need to push.
(FYI, my B&M ssk was installed at Sharkwerks biiiiatch)
The Sport shifter is car independent it is not 997 specific. It will drop into the Boxer series as well as a GT2.
The 997 OEM shifter does not have a "name" but it has the newer bushings, steel brace, and it keeps the smooth precise action. It does not feel like the "short shift" at all - at least to me.
Still confused?
Ben,
I don't think so, but if there was I'm sure if there was it would provide guht fahrt!
BTW
That was one of the wurst replies today.
guht fahrt = good driving (a common sign in DE)
61 cents to the Euro today
Porsche prices things cheaper in the States than in Europe and there is a 20% tax here. Americans survive here by shipping things in from the States via APO (armed forces post office).
so are you saying that if you wanted to upgrade your 996, you would go with the "997 shift console upgrade" as in this website (
http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/me..._Code=996Trans
) instead of the B&M short shifter?
I am gonna have to disagree... I still love a full manual. The PDK is awsome, but something about no clutch would bother me. I can just see when I am really on it and getting ready to shift, jam in the clutch (WHOOOPSIE - that's the brake !!)
no thanks, though for traffic it would be better
I see no reason to spend 500 bucks on a porsche shifter...my B&M works flawlessly no notchyness and a short throw. I am glad it worked for you Steve but there ain't no friggin way I'm spending $$$ like that.....
Did you do anything special to get no notchiness? Seriously, I took mine out, but still have it as a total assembly, because I was able to get a 997 setup for like $60. I tried everything I could think of, but the shift into first, especially was very hard, and there was a distinct "bottoming out" clunk in 2-4-6. I could improve it to a point, but never get rid of it. Very frustrating.
