Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. It's too noisey for me but my local Porsche dealer says it can't be adjusted - ideally I'd like to get rid of the rasp below 25mph.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust ideally i'd like' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'wee bit more qualified' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust ideally i'd like' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Especially as in the UK the system costs 1,600 ($2,300) as a factory fitted extra for delivery with the car.

To clarify, the mechanic at the Porsche dealer said they'd delivered SEVERAL new cars with sport exhaust installed from the factory as an option.

No, the sport exhaust cannot be factory installed on US cars.

Ben, I'd like to know the option code for the factory installed sports exhaust, as well.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I got all that noise and not even 1 more extra pony. : (
Should have saved the cash and got a B& B or similar.
I think I will wait to to the last vers. of the 996TT or wait for the new model.
Thanks again
JD
Sport exhaust is NOT heavier than standard exhaust. Call your parts dept and get shipping weight on both.
Also, the instructors at PDE (which are probably a wee bit more qualified to speak on such matters than most of use here):

have all said the 01 cars delivered w/sport exhaust ARE in fact faster than the 00s they had without.
Then again, they are employeed by Porsche and Porsche does make a nice profit on the sport exhaust both as an option at the time of purchase as well as an add on later.
I've got the Factory Sports Exhaust on my June delivered 996 C2 cab.
When I went to collect the car from my local dealer, there it was all gleaming and new - i just wanted to get out the showroom and tried very hard to show some level of interest as my dealer showed my how the engine cover release works etc.! Anyway, when he started the car up to remove it from the showroom, it nearlly blew the windows out!
Yep - it's noisey and I've loads of conflicting reports on how it works and whether it delivers more HP or not.
I have to say that for my liking it's a little too loud in traffic.
Assuming that it's the same system in Europe and the USA, it seems to work via a speedometer control.
Apparently a flap opens at between 0-25mph, closes between 25-45mph and then reopens thereafter. The middle range is to allow for town driving where the noise can be a little tedious.
As I live in Central London, most of my driving is under 25mph! It's too noisey for me but my local Porsche dealer says it can't be adjusted - ideally I'd like to get rid of the rasp below 25mph.
After 45mph, on an open road it's almost of Ferrari like noise proportions! - Great.
I have to say, that with the benefit of hindsight, I'd have preferred to go to a specialist after delivery, tuned the sound a little more to my liking, and got guaranteed extra horses. Especially as in the UK the system costs 1,600 ($2,300) as a factory fitted extra for delivery with the car.
Seems as though several people go for a 'fabspeed' system - not sure it's available in the UK.
Glad we cleared up that it is an option over the counter as well as when ordering the car.
If the sport exhaust is too loud for you, it is not that tough to use mechanics wire to permanently close the valve on each of the mufflers. I did that and it took about 30 minutes to see if I could live with it being quiet after loving the sport sound for a while. It will sound exactly as stock mufflers do at all speeds with this valve closed.
Yep - I heard that the flaps can be wired shut.
What I'd really like though is just to be able to close the flaps below 25mph.
My dealer says this can't be acheived.
What Porsche should have done is simply have it switchable from the dash.
Sorry to be argumentative, but you were right until not too long ago. I know SEVERAL people in the US who ordered their cars with sport exhaust from the factory. Call your dealer and ask.
Homemark, I agree. If you could switch it loud or quiet at will from the dash it would be perfect. Anyone have a guess as to how hard that would be as a do it yourself project?
I just asked my dealer and he has no idea what I am talking about. I even looked in the order guides and couldn't find the sport exhaust listed. Could you please ask your dealer to provide the option code and cost?
Thanks much!
Ben, I'd like to know the option code for the factory installed sports exhaust, as well. I definitely want it installed on my MY02, and a factory install would be preferable over after-market for me. Thanks.
Hi Chris and Viken. I sent him (the p-car dealer's mechanic) an e-mail (diff state and time zone now) and I'll let you know when I hear back. I'll also pose the question to the dealer on the funcarsonline board.
Given a couple dealers have denied that such a factory option exists, I'm obviously inclined to say the mechanic made a mistake or I misunderstood him.
Thanks, Ben. I already knew that but since you insisted...
I would guess that those who told you they have seen cars coming with this exhaust were confusing it with option X54 which is the oval polished stainless steel tips.
I just picked up my 01 C4 from getting the Sport Exhaust installed and I had a switch installed in the location where the heated seat switches would go. We used a PSM switch with an additional relay since the PSM switch sends just a pulse. Sport Exhaust loud mode shows the orange light on, quite mode light off. Works great!
If you have heated seats you install the switch in an available opening to the right or left of the stereo system or get the new panel for a 02 Targa that has 4 switch opens for heated seats and Targa top controls along with one blank.
Now in my car PSM has two meanings "Porsche Stability Management" and "Porsche Sport Mufflers"
