Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello folks, just doing some oil change maintenance on the car and wanted to inspect the oil filter - since you guys got me all paranoid with the RMS issues. Can someone tell me which way does the oil flow in the filter? Does the oil go into the cylinder from the top/bottom and out of the sides or does it go in from the sides and out from the top/bottom? I went through each outside pleat and saw nothing. But then I started wondering if I should be looking inside the cylinder. Help and thanks in advance!!!

POST 2Original post

The outside is where the debree collects. Cut the top and bottom off and spread it out.

Darn.. I didn't even think of that. I was going through it pleat by pleat!!!

POST 4Original post

Also, the oil filter inspection has nothing to do with RMS. You may mean IMSB issues. Anyway, watch for black, brown, and metal bits.

POST 5Original post

Specifically ferrous metals are what you do not want to find in there. So if a magnet sticks to it, that's not ideal. But +1, definitely just cut the top and bottom off and spread it out, much easier to see everything that way. Cheers, DS
