Suggestion
Also, since the coolant is out, good idea to replace the plastic coupler pipe just to the right of the alternator with a brass fitting and stainless steel clamps.

I'll be doing the same thing this winter with mine, (pump, low temp T-stat) and bought the vacuum evac kit that uses compressed air, for around $110, IIRC.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a '99 C2 996, and I'm getting ready to replace the water pump. I am also ordering a gasket, thermostat, & drain plug washer.
The question is, should I also replace the coolant hoses that connect to the water pump? They look original to me, but I can't be sure. How difficult are they to replace? I assume there are only 2 hoses to change, but are there other hoses I should be considering while I have the coolant drained?
Is there anything else I should replace "while I'm in there"?
Thanks.
They should only be changed if they are not stiff. If they are easy to squeeze they should be replaced. Others that would need to be replaced could also look swollen.
Make sure you have the latest coolant tank cap and plenty of Porsche coolant. Mine took almost 2 gallons of coolant/distilled water mix to refill when I did this job. Might as well throw a new serpentine belt in there as well...good time to do it for peace of mind. Also, since the coolant is out, good idea to replace the plastic coupler pipe just to the right of the alternator with a brass fitting and stainless steel clamps. Given the age (99 - mine is too) this piece will probably just crumble in your hands when you remove it.
I recently contacted an indy for the cooling system freshened up and below are the parts he suggestedbe replaced AT THE SAME TIME (also helps with labor cost): water pump + gasket, t-stat + gasket, reservoir, cap, drive belt and coolant. Lines/hoses/fittings AS NEEDED
FWIW, best prices are from SunCoast. I am on the fence on a DIY or not for the above (have read the articles and watched the videos...just lacking in confidence
) However, labor at a min of $100/hr x several hours might help me decide
Give the coolant hoses a big squeeze with your hand. Grip the hoses close to where they connect and arrange to have your finger tips pressing at the bottom of the hose.
When you grip the hose try to push your fingers through the bottom of the hose.
If it feels like you can the hose should be replaced.
If one has bad -- given the miles/age of the car and the fact all the hoses (I guess) are original -- all should be considered suspect.
Now then, when I had my 02 Boxster in with over 200K miles on it to have a bad coolant tank replaced I asked the tech about doing the hoses.
He said they are really long lasting and with no signs of any problems to leave them alone. He said a full set is expensive to replace. I can't be sure now if he quoted me a rough price, but I seem to recall a figure of >$1000 parts/labor. Might be my imagination.
Anyhow, I listened to his advice and elected not to have him replace the hoses. He replaced the coolant tank and I guess the cap and left the original hoses alone. He topped up the coolant level with fresh anti-freeze/water mix (the dealer has this stuff in a large tank on a cart with a vacuum system to facilitate refilling the cooling system with no air pockets) and that was that.
Now at 260K miles the hoses are still fine.
Wore out and had to replace another ignition key though. 3rd or 4th one now.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Unless your coolant cap is recent, just replace it, too. They weep after a while and cause the "mystery" coolant loss. I'll be doing the same thing this winter with mine, (pump, low temp T-stat) and bought the vacuum evac kit that uses compressed air, for around $110, IIRC. I'll be doing my AOS and motor mounts at the same time. I wonder if the '02 and later motors have that same crumble prone pipe next the alternator. I don't see it on mine, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Any pics?
