On a road trip down that way driving on I-10 through Phoenix and going the limit -- and noting the speed camera warning signs -- and I thought I was going to get run over.

Rubbish the road speeds are generally set far too low for the quality of the cars, brakes, safety equipment etc (in particular in Canada)!!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thought it would be interesting to see who has or is the biggest nut! I got my 1999 C2 up to 140 on the I-10 the other day here in MS with light traffic. No problem. Have this desire to break 150 for some reason...but the thought of handcuffs, fines and impounds have kept me from it. How fast have you gone? Please, No fish stories!
Nothing too crazy for me. I got my 996 up to 100 mph once on a desolate stretch of road with a 75 mph speed limit.
I did get a rented 997 S up to 252 kilometers per hour on one of the unlimited speed sections of the autobahn in Germany. That was fun.
faster than I should have, faster then was smart and faster then was safe
looking back I always feel stupid about it, slightly embarrassed - remorseful - thankful nothing went wrong
then I repeat to make sure
Montana has changed that - there are now limits posted everywhere. I guess one man's definition of "reasonable and prudent" isn't necessarily the same as the next man's definition...
I would be more concerned about killing someone or yourself not the fines etc...
I have a friend who was nearly killed when he was going too fast and hit a telephone pole that nearly split the car in half. The T-pole ended up next to him in the drivers seat. It went through the front of the car and straight down where the center console was. I drive safe on public roads. I have some fun but not too much...
Back when I was young and invincible I hit ~165 in my built Mitsubishi Eclipse turbo (hit redline in 5th gear). The fastest I've had the 911 up to is barely over 100. Tickets are too expensive and just not worth it anymore.
145+ ish on Road Atlanta back straight - run out of room quickly. Not a public road but that's the fastest I have gone.
My turbo is now track retired since the thought of something going wrong at that speed in a street car is just too scary.
Next year it is a track built car with full safety equipment.
I foolishly decided to see if I could break 200kph on the back straight at the local track (about 15kph more than I was used to driving). I forgot how much that extra 15kph adds to breaking distance and almost went too deep.
I'm pretty sure I made it past 200, but was looking at the track, not the speedo.
this (on the autobahn after picking up my targa at the factory).
Don't use that GPS much anymore, but last I looked, it still showed 164 as the max speed, kind of a nice constant reminder of that trip.
I always think more in terms of untimely tire punctures. My mental governor is set @ 135. The last time, many years ago, was up a 30% grade, with PCCB's at the ready.
Fabulous cars for going fast, however, going to be an old fart - to me there is never a safe enough place on public roads in the U.S. where exceeding the speed limit is justified or prudent. There are safe sponsored events throughout the nation where you can see what your car can do. Having been to many Porsche, PCA and SCCA events, not only does everyone have a safe time and you can do anything from novice on up, but I have seen many times where speed has caused some devastating wrecks. In most cases the driver walks away but the car is totaled. Anyway, have 2 sons and they always ask to drive the Porsche...my answer is and always will be NO. I tell them they can have their own when they earn it themselves.
Rubbish the road speeds are generally set far too low for the quality of the cars, brakes, safety equipment etc (in particular in Canada)!! I would argue that a far greater risk are the old gits driving far too slowly and the speed differential that causes more accidents than does pure speeding IMO.
The problem isn't with the quality of the cars, brakes and safety equipment. It's with the drivers. The capabilities of modern cars far exceed the capability of most drivers. Unfortunately most drivers can hardly handle the cars let alone the surprises and adjustments required in an uncontrolled environment like the street. As you said, it just takes one "old git" to pull out in front of you when you're flying along...It will be his fault, but you'll both be dead.
Going fast in a straight line on the street is over rated. Its commonplace if you succeed and embarrassing if you don't. The only time to do it is in daylight, early in the morning on a completely deserted multi lane highway, which is getting increasingly hard to find in the US today. Go ahead, do it once to get it out of your system.
Then, take your car to the track and you will see how great these cars are in the corners. The track will calm you down and you will be much more restrained on the street, realizing that you could never safely reach the limit of your car on the road.
I'll certainly stay out of southern AZ. On a road trip down that way driving on I-10 through Phoenix and going the limit -- and noting the speed camera warning signs -- and I thought I was going to get run over. Crazy drivers there.
Sincerely,
Macster.
- 155mph (German Autobahn)
- 140mph (Ring - it is a public one way toll road)
In the US, will never admit more than the speed limit
. So, I think 75 in Nevada.

I'm sure the conversation in this car shortly before the horrific crash went along something like: "Hey let's see how fast your new Porsche Twin Turbo will do!!".
A witness nearby estimated the car was going 150 KPH, or close to 100 MPH on this stretch of straight road with 60 KPH / 37.5 MPH posted speed limit, right up until the driver lost control, went airborne, crashed through multiple sets of fences, clipping a tree, which ejected the passenger from the car, and killing him.
The witness helped to find the passenger before emergency services showed up, he provided some very graphic accounts to the news media describing in detail of the last few moments of the passengers' life, I'll spare you the graphic descriptions, but that seemed like a very painful few minutes before he sucumbed to his injuries.
Not that I want to be a spokesperson for safe driving, but google "Nikki Catsouras" it was after I saw these that I decided to save it for the track (although I can't seem to make it there...ever).
My sons, including the 17 year old have driven my car. I would let the 30 year old take it on his own if e wanted to. The 17 year old, no way, only with me in the seat next to him.
I don't think I have had the 996 to much over 100, but I had my '76 911S up to 125 or so and one of my 928's up to 140+ in west Texas. I had that one in cruise control at 110+ going across west Texas. Divided highway and you could see for miles ahead.
The Autobahn is really not that much different than some of our highways, the biggest difference is that drivers know to stay out of the left lane. There are still bad crashes there though.
I never drove a car o. The Autobahn, but I did ride a Harley Electra Glide, cruising at 90-100, and you definitely stayed out of the left lane even at that speed.
Well .. the officer's laser gun said I was doing tripple digits
now we have to see how good my lawyer is!
On empty freeway it is tempting to floor it ... and I have had 911 friends hit 160 PLUS but probably best to save that for the track ...
Ive done 130 in Germany .. but there is huge difference between 200 kmph and above .. above that speed things happen very fast .. beyond a normal reaction time .. and I did not care to run at that speed ir greater than that on public road
Good news is I just won audi. Driving experience .. so I should be able to take r8 out on the track and see whet she can do .......
Short bursts of speed on empty roads are one thing... Running 140+ for sustained periods with other traffic on the autobahn is another. Great fun, but exhausting.
Old Gits? Just wondering, does that include semi-trucks, gasoline tanker trucks, minivans full of babies and kids, your 80 year old mother driving to her doctor's appointment, parents dropping off kids at school, a contractors pickup truck loaded with work tools so he can make a living? You my friend (and no offense) are living in a fantasy world....traffic always goes to the lowest common denominator on public roads, because that is what responsible people do so our society works, and we just have to live with that reality, like it or not. To me it is more about control anyway. Speed is exhilarating but short lived. Restrained control of power is the greatest aphrodisiac, but I guess you learn that with age, wisdom and experience. Take it to the track and have a blast. On public roads, drive like everyone else is going to hit you!
I like to say that I'm really surprised that:
1. This has remained civil considering the topic
2. More people acknowledge their speeds more so than other posts I've read
3. A thread like this hasn't been locked yet
4. There are pics(but no pics of someone holding the camera in front of dash going 160+mph
)
5. This turning into Europeans vs. America war
With that said, I'll never forget when my cousin's husband(conservative guy) told me he went 110mph on the Autobahn and was totally stoked about it. All I could do was just laugh.
I will have to say that I may or may not have accidentally hit triple digits passing two cars at the same time on a back country road. With an x50, it's very easy to do. I was slowing down (with engine braking) afterwards when wouldn't you know it, a CHP nailed me with a radar gun. I deserved it. 83 in a 55. Couldn't hear the detector over the open-top and the music going full blast.
I try to keep reasonable in my driving around the US. As others have mentioned, the road conditions aren't nearly what they are in Germany for sustained speeds. Plus, getting one $450 fine tends to make my right foot lose weight (plus eventual points, if I kept on doing it).
Even I-280 between San Francisco and San Jose is a bit hairy at speed. There are surface undulations and bumps that if you hit at 120 or even 150, may really ruin your day.
I once drove from Prague to Amsterdam through Germany averaging (while moving) about 130 mph (had a plane to catch). I can second someone else's comment -- it's nerve racking, white knuckling it over mountain passes because at that speed, a car gets very very light (this was in an un-aerodynamic MBZ E3XX sort of car in the mid 90s).
Didn't realize this was a big girls forum I thought is was for sports car enthusiasts - why not get yourself a Prius and be done with it???
It's all time and place and where I drive and ride there are plenty of safe places to have a spirited run where it endanger no one - well other than myself!! It's funny I'm yet to see any other Porsche's out on the road ever being driven other than at the speed limit holding up traffic!!
