Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking to purchase a 2002 c2, has 60K miles RMS and clutch done. Asking 26K Any help wouuld be appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Sounds a little high. What are the options and/or equipment on this car?

POST 3Original post

Having the clutch done is key at that mileage, as you would probably have to do it fairly soon. I think that asking price is in the right ballpark, depending on the condition of the car... and the seller's motivation being the most important factor of course. Another important question is whether the car matches your 'wants,' in terms of color, options, interior, etc.. A final condition is proximity. If the car is local and meets your criteria, the cost of finding a cheaper, similar car in another city or state could easily eclipse a lower sale price.

POST 4Original post

Options? conditions? History? Underwater in Long Island?

POST 5Original post

Condition and paper work(records)is so important. Have you driven the car? A thorough PPI can also help you decide on the asking price, and may help you in negotiations. GL

You can Trade one in at a Dealership & get 22-23k so unless this ones in pretty bad shape I don't see how 26k is High (28-30k, maybe)! Especially if its it good condition, I don't know how much truth there is to it but I've heard after 60k miles that their less likely to have the IMS & RMS Issues? Any truth to that? jmo

POST 7Original post

I just (3 weeks ago) purchased a 2002 C2 with 63000 miles on it for a bit less than that from a private owner. All receipts including a new dealer installed engine at 58000 miles. I thought the price was a bit high IF IT HAD THE ORIGINAL ENGINE, with the new engine I was sold. Sailed through the PPI so I flew out to Jersey from Colorado and drove it back home. Very glad I did not wait for a more convenient time to go, who knows if the car would still be in good shape now! Seal gray over Black, manual, PSM, Flared Rockers, heated comfort seats with full power/lumbar/memory, 18" Turbo Twists, and a few more goodies. Figured about $10K total options on original sticker and I love the color.

Yeah it sounds like you'd been crazy NOT to take that deal Walter! I know some guys frown on when one thats not that old has already had to have a new motor put in it but Hell its a NEW motor!

The options and condition impact the price. Also, the IMS and RMS can have issues at any time. Cars that have been driven more often seem to have fewer problems, so that's certainly a good thing. If you take a quick scan of autotrader.com, you'll find a selection of 2002 cars in the $23K - $24K range. As an example, I'm looking at one right now with ~56K miles that is equipped with: Bose sound system, Tiptronic, aftermarket navigation, rear spoiler, full-leather interior, Litronics, etc. for $23,777 asking price. I would expect to negotiate this price down further. There's another car listed at $22,495 with ~76K miles on the clock. There's a cab with a 6MT with ~79K miles on the clock listed for $22,995. Those are just a few examples, but in my mind they support the fact that $26K is a little high. Again - we don't know the options or the condition of this car. It might be worth $26K. Ultimately, it's worth whatever a buyer will pay for it. If it's the right car in the right place at the right time, then the price might be okay. If I were the buyer, I'd look at other 2002s for comparison before I made an offer.

Yeah, the records indicate 5 RMS repairs (!) and a cltch replacement, the final time fixing the RMS it was determined that actually the Intermediate Shaft bore was out of round by .07mm, which was the cause for the engine replacement. Normally (in any other car) I'd be concerned with n engine replacement at that mileage, with a 996 I was frankly more concerned if it had NOT been replaced! I know (after researching the issues) that there are many more cars that don't have issues than cars that DO, but unfortunately in the public mind (aka the casual enthusiast) these have become a bit branded as having problem engines, in the same way that generally everyone assumes that all 964 series cars have severe oil leaks when that's really not the case...

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

car is a 6 spd, heated seats, mirrors, no nav, but I will put in. Car is a silver coupe, great shape and I will do a ppi. I expect to pay 25000 for this car.
